Manchester Accommodation

Ive been offered a place to study Ancient History at Manchester University in September. So, Ive been looking into accommodation and applied to Denmark Road - Ensuite Shower, Weston Hall - Ensuite Shower and Burkhardt House - Ensuite Shower. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on these halls, the atmosphere, proximity etc

thank you

Haven't any experience of the 3 halls you have applied for, but what are you looking for in your halls? Quiet? More sociable?

I currently do Ancient History at Manchester, myself.

Thanks so much for your reply ! I just don't want to be stuck in lonely halls, I picked those three based on proximity but if you have any useful advice on shopping ? etc that'd be great
Also hows the course for you so far ? what did you choose for your electives ? Thank you

Last year I stayed in Oak House in Fallowfield, and the Fallowfield campus is generally agreed as the most sociable, though it is also the furthest from the University by quite a margin.

I have heard stories from people living in Grovesnor last year that the halls(and City campus in general) weren't very sociable and contained a lot of internationals and British people who didn't really want to socialise, but it does happen in all halls.

Regardless, I would recommend Oak House(or Owens Park, if you want catered) but some argue it's too threadbare and basic, but it's up to you.

I picked Intensive Latin(both semesters) and The Odyssey. The Odyssey was alright but not perfect. I enjoyed the text itself, and the course was better than other things I've done at University.

Latin was fun, and I would recommend picking a language to do in First Year, as it doesn't count towards your classification if you fail it and you can see if you want to continue with it. For instance, I enjoyed it and am currently doing Advanced Latin after passing Intensive last year. Intensive Latin cost 20 credits per semester, so that's why I only picked 1 other elective, iirc.

This year, I picked Cicero, which I did not enjoy whatsoever, and Graeco-Roman Egypt, which I am enjoying.

I preferred the Roman Republic to Archaic Greece, but both lecturers were good, I just preferred the actuality of Rome to the relative unknown of Greece.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you for all of your recommendations, I think I'll be taking a language maybe Greek. As a personal interest is biblical history and the extracts of early gospels is mostly in Greek. How did you find making friends ?

Friends were easy to make. If you're polite and don't look like you've eaten a lemon or a bee-hive you'll be fine.
