Yes you will need one to volunteer. You will still be working with children and so will need to be cleared.

CRB checks in schools are compulsory for people working in schools. I can't believe that any school would allow anyone to be in contact with children without one. No offence but you could be anyone. As a parent I would not be happy.
I think it's a requirement to get a CRB check before undertaking any work where you are in contact with vulnerable people, including children. It's only about £36 and it arrives within a few weeks. Best thing to do is contact any schools you want to volunteer in and see what they say.

The school I volunteered at didn't care much. I didn't stay long either.

I don't blame you either. That is shocking that they didn't require a CRB check. I'm sure its compulsory now especially after the Holly and Jessica case.

It was very simple: I emailed a few schools asking to undertake work experience. They called back within a day, asking me to come in the next day.
I'd say they wanted to save on employing TAs to be honest....

Looking into HLTA jobs at the moment.
