5 portions day - does juice count

Hey there I just bought a new juicer as I was hoping to increase my intake of fruit and veg especially because im doing full time work now. However i am convinced i heard that juice only counts as one portion a day due to the loss of fibre content or something. However if you made it yourself and keep the fruit bits (juice I buy is usually just liquid form with no bits) can that count as a 2nd or 3rd portion?

thanks for reading

Of course. What do you think happens when you chew something?

All a blender does is do the chewing for you, basically.

Obviously if you filter the flesh of the fruit out then you lose the fibre.

You are right that fruit juice can only count as one portion a day no matter how much you drink. Self-squeezed is probably even better for you than stuff bought in a carton, but I'd have thought the juicy bits would only make a negligible difference.

yes very much so - drink innocent smoothie! i think a pint of that is your recommended daily intake of fruit...

I know that pure fruit juice (bought in cartons) can count as one portion. :p: But I'm not sure if it can count for a greater amount of portions the more of it you drink.

Juice does count, but it is best to use fresh juice, no added sugar!

Home-made fruit smoothies are better because you get fibre in them, but fresh juice is better than shop-bought stuff.

Juice can only count as one (even with the juicy bits, because that's just wrong anyway). If you crush it, whizz it up in a blender, or somehow liquify the whole fruit then that can count as more, as long as it's different fruits.

Ie 2 squizzed bananas = one portion
1 squizzed banana + 1 squizzed apple = 2 portions

I'm having some fruit at the moment, as I have a terrible cold. ;yucky;

It's also only one portion if you eat (without being squizzed) the same thing more than once. And different types of juice always only count as one portion

How comes? So it literally means when I eat 3 bananas (small ones) before a game of football or at training it doesn't count as 3 portions of fruit.

So if I eat 5 apples a day, throughout the day, it only counts as one portion?
:eek:

I thought they were recently introduced in Germany, but must have been wrong. I like them :biggrin:
