Graph y = |2x| and y = |x-1| and squint at the screen.

Graph y = |2x| - |x-1| and attempt to interpret it.

Or, better still, use a piece of paper to square both sides and solve a quadratic inequality.

From the definition of abs x:

Unparseable latex formula:

\displaystyle \left |2x\right | = \begin {Bmatrix} 2x & if & x>=0 \\ -2x & if & x<0 \end



Unparseable latex formula:

\displaystyle \left |x-1\right | = \begin {Bmatrix} x-1& if & x-1>=0 & -> & x>=1\\ 1-x & if & x-1<0 & -> & x<1 \end



So you have to solve the inequality on three intervals:
x<0 , 0<=x<1 and x>=1

substituting the proper term in the abs 2x and abs x-1

i.e for x<0

2x<=1x -2x<=1-x
x>=1 x>=-1
so here the solution is -1<=x<0 real interval
