Feeling overwhelmed... 3 essays, 3 days.

Is anyone else suddenly feeling the strain of their uni workload? I am. Three of my essays are due on Friday... all 1500 words. Granted I left them 'til the last minute, but y'know, that's me. It feels impossible, and I don't even feel motivated to attempt them because two out of three are boring as hell. It's not difficult work... It's just the sheer monotony of it, and the time it takes to do.

Don't despair. That's still enough time to get them all done. Don't think of those three essays as a daunting whole, though. You need to tackle them one by one. Start by dashing off the least boring one, to get a sense of achievement and motivate yourself for lasting through the others. For the remaining two, you can start by writing very detailed essay plans - 1500 words isn't really all that much, so a detailed plan will probably already be about half the word count. Then make yourself some coffee and flesh out the essay plans with a few examples and quotes and you're there.
Good luck!

I now its easier said than done (as im similar) but you just have to get it done, you'll feel a lot better after everythings done and you have a small amount of time to breath before the next assignment.

I still haven't gotten used to the weekly essay crisis here, you'd think after a year I might have adapted my working habits, but nope....

I know what you mean - and I've had two years to get used to it, actually... Essay crises are just part of the creative process, though, so it's important to persist and not give in to them.

I've got one in for 3pm and am procrastinating now!

It'll get done - it always does somehow.

Shouldn't have left it til the last minute then, should you?!

My workload is completely daunting. I have one reading list with 14 books on it, all of which my tutor says are essential, with a 2000 word essay on that, then another long reading list followed by a presentation, and then on Thursday I will get another long reading list with a 2000 word essay, all this due in for Thursday (presentation), next Wednesday (one essay) and Friday (the other essay). It's not good and i'm having to work pretty much constantly to stay on top of it all.

:ditto: was given three weeks to do an essay for yesterday and didn't actually sit down to it till sunday 10pm. shouldn't have taken too long being only 1500 words but then TSR became irresistable:redface: so I didn't end up finishing it till 4am. You know its under presure that your best work gets produced:p:

Feeling rather smug about having done mine which isn't due in till Feb, I can't leave them to the last minute though, I know that if I do something will get in the way and I wouldn't be able to do them.

We got given a list of all the counted assignments at the beginning of the year

You mean you won't have any more essays until February? How is that possible?

I've got 4 weekly 2,000 worders before February, 3 of which are on a different paper I know nowt about (European (read: Greecian and Roman) History 400 BC - 67AD) and a 5,000 word long essay that is basically coursework and worth 25% of my marks for the first two years which needs to be done over Christmas. Fun!

There's something good about the feeling you get when you're under loads of pressure, just have no idea how on earth you're going to manage all this work, and then the next day, it's all managed to be in on time .

Because everything is due in the first week of February - aside from one thing for next month - which is already done.

Plus a clinical assessment which is due in 4 weeks, but that's based on 150 clinical hours, which I'm in the middle of doing at the moment and need 2 or more short essays for that (which I can't do until I decide what they'll be on)

I'm doing midwifery which probably does have less essays which need to be in (only 4 essays to be marked, 5 presentations on various topics, a practical and oral exam on obstetric emergencies (which are pass/fail as they are a case of 'this woman and/or baby will die unless you save them, and why are you doing that, what evidence is there to back up what you have done and so on', and a teaching package to be both written and taught, and assessed on. 2 summative clinical assessments (5 formative ones) - all of which have a few reflective essays involved but you can't write them until they happen - I think I've done 5 so far and I'll probably do another 2 over the next 3 weeks), and on top of that 30 hours a week working shifts in a hospital (which we have to do for the degree), the majority of the time - normally doing the 30 hours a week for 5 weeks (with 2-3 days also in uni) then back in uni for 2 weeks.

We may have a few less essays to write but I wouldn't say the course is a doss (plus we only get 7 weeks off a year)

Ah, OK, that would make sense. My subject is largely essay-based, so it just sounded a bit weird to me.

that's easier said than done, for me, anyway. we get a ridiculous amount of work too... i do single honours english lit., but with an outside module, so i end up with the full literature workload PLUS a sh*tload of anthropology and sociology... i wish i'd just taken the default 'creative writing' module and saved myself a lot of hassle.

so true... i literally cannot wait until friday 1pm. then it'll all be over with, for better or for worse. though it makes the weekend feel so empty once it's all over! weird feeling. it was never like this at college.

i've planned the half-interesting essay, so all i really need to do is type it up into legible form. however the reading, etc. for the two most boring ones remains untouched... ugh. *feels sick*

I've got an essay due in a matter of hours yet here I am still working on it!

It takes only 2-4 hrs to write or type an essay once you've done the research.

And plagerism certificates are ugly. Takes 2 days for me to get them.

Reply 18

If it makes you feel any better, zeebiatch: I've got an extended essay (5,000 - 6,000 words and counting towards my finals) to finish by the end of the week and I've only got around one and a half pages so far.
What are the two horribly boring topics, by the way?

^^I think I'd rather not do an essay than plagiarise it... Thankfully I've never see a plagiarism certificate. And don't want to :P

Ouch... what year are you in? Thank god we haven't had any huge essays yet! I think the most I've ever done was 3000 at A level. 1500 woudn't usually be so bad if only I was half-interested in the topic :/

One essay's about the dramaturgical approach to social life (I'm not sure what that means), and the other is on the moral(s) of Romeo and Juliet. And the one I'm almost finished is about ethnographic studies of the nuclear family.

I'm beginning to think that I should be just be making sure that I hand in something on Friday, and not worrying so much about the quality... I really can't see myself finishing them all in time. I think I'd rather have three essays worth 50 marks each, than 1 worth 70...
