I went to the doctors about my depression and was prescirbed fluoxetine 20mg Just wondering if there are any others on this and could tell me of any regular side effects.
As with most anti-depressants, there are quite a few side-effects with fluoxetine. There's some info about the drug and possible side-effects here Everyone reacts differently to drugs and you mightn't even get any of the side effects so try not to worry about it too much. Just let your doctor know if you get any sort of reaction though.
For those who have no idea what fluoxetine is, it's the generic name for prozac.
To the OP - why would you go on a medication without doing your research first? Not very smart, if you ask me. Also, aren't the side-effects listed on the bottle (or in a paper that comes with it)? They always were when I was on meds...
Yes well I got prescribed them today ok never had medication before I read what there were on the leaflet but I wanted to know the recurring amomgst other ordinary peiople.

It's hard to say which ones you're likely to get, if any, because everyone will react differently. Mood changes are definitely a listed side-effect though. Like I said, go back to your doc if you think it's serious.
Yeah I will go back I have appointment booked for next week already just to check if they working etc but I don't think nothing serious is gonna happen.

Anti-depressants often take months to start working properly but you should have noticed any possible reccuring side-effects by then. I hope you're feeling better soon

Exactly, give it time (at least three weeks!) and then consider your options after the effects are noticed. The SSRI's aren't as instant as many think!
Prozac is the generic name for Fluoxetine. Interesting stuff from a scientific point of view. Look up SSRI's if anyones interested. I did work experience in a mental hospital where they were giving this out to alot of patients to help with their depression .
you'll probably find that you won't notice the effects as much as the people around you, as it'll be a gradual change that you may not recognise. one idea which i know a friend has found useful is keeping a diary (if you don't already). they note down how they're feeling and when they look back on it in weeks/months they can see any changes. it'll make you feel a lot more confident and help collect any thoughts.
I have been on a lot of meds, but few weeks ago went back onto Prozaz - liquid mint stuff, as I cant swallow pills
Anyway, I looked through all the side-effects and have never had any trouble. I have noticed though that I have lost my appetite, not sure if it's linked to the medication. Could it be a possbility?
I was on it, only for about 3 months though, but i found i had a huge appetite (as oposed to the entire lack of one before i went on them), thus put on loads of weight, but i also lost concentration really easily - i basically had the symptoms of ADHD.
Make sure, if you're at uni, or you have exams coming up, you let your lecturers/teachers know - they can affect performance and are a legitimate reason for mitigations... if only I'd known!

I had the same problem as you - I developed a huge appetite, and I remember wanting to eat anything full of complex carbohydrates. Weight gain and declining performance in school was the last thing I needed when trying to escape a suicidal state of self-loathing, so it kind of made everything worse.
I (stupidly) went cold turkey on the meds, and got myself switched to bupropion (aka Wellbutrin) after 2-3 months.
Wangers
whoever posted wikipedia - it can be edited my anyone - I havent checked the accuracy - but there are many are authorititive souces!
Yeah, sorry, I was lazy. It was the first thing that came up on google. I'll try to find a better site next time.
That is my probs - gone cold turkey too many times as I never eer felt I was benefiting or whatever - didn;t want to depend on meds.
I been on them though since I was 15 - i'm 21 in a month and dont feel much better. I am worried about the loss of appetite though as it may lead to other problems, will need to mention it to the doctor i think.
My college work is all over the place, missed a whole lot of classses. Just hope they understand

Are you just on meds or do you have regular counselling/therapy?
I did have a cognitive physcologist an a physiatrist I went too, but stopped about this time last year. basically I kept sleeping in for appointments as I couldn't motivate myself to get up in the morning n stuff - and now if I want more therapy, I need to wait another 6-9 months and the same thing will prob happen.
If you're a guy, you may have problems "getting excited" and it can cause your sperm count to drop - or so i've been told anyway. in the experiences i've had with it (i knew someone that was on it), you sleep all the time and your heart rate lowers a bit, which is what makes you sleep so easily i think
