pre-mRNA processing

Simple question, not so simple answer.

Why does pre-mRNA processing occur in eukaryotes?

Well I get why the intron splicing occurs, but not the capping or the polyadenylation...
The 5' cap is a ribosomal binding site and it allows the cell to distinguish native RNA from viral RNA. The length of a poly-A tail is proportional to the half life of mRNA and can be regulated by proteins DAN and PAP. Poly(A)-binding-protein (PABP) is a transcription factor that allows for regulation of gene expression.
