Fear of studying

I'm scared about studying properly (in the sense of concentrating during lectures, doing "immersion" in the topic you study) because when I do that, I mean, while I concentrate, my "social mind" is totally blurred.

e.g. today I was trying to listen to the lecturer and understanding everything very well... a pretty-looking girl was looking at me and smiled at me when our eyes crossed... and I was like totally neutral, irresponsive...
I simply couldn't react instinctively... like when you have "writer's block".
And it makes me feel isolated.

And it's absolutely irritating!

I'm an extroverted person, I'm very social!

But when I study, it's an "either or" situation.
I can't focus my attention on both other people and what I'm studying.

I must add that on days I study for exams, I easily loose my patience with other people... :frown:

Is there no way to study properly and not loose my social/relational instincts?

stop looking at pretty girls during your lecture in the first place

You're male right? Classic case of how men cannot multitask

Well being immersed in something does entail having less of an interest in everything else, why don't you just managed your time, say smile at the pretty lady before and after the lecture, and concentrate in the middle?

multitask

That's the word I was looking for...

Any advice on how to multitask?
Could you girls reveal your secret?

Oh, PLEAASEE!!

No one can study and socialise at the very same time. Work for a few hours, stop, then go out and do the social thing. I don't get why you think you ought to be able to chat girls up in lectures and listen to what's going on at the same time- no one can do that!

Its the lead downfall in while people have trouble in studying - another offer presents itself that is more favourable then studying in your case an attractive girl.

If your in a lecture then that's exactly what your mind has to be focused on, no matter how hard it is. You just have to train your mind i.e. if you don't listen then you wont know your content and then it will mean you will have more to study for come exam time making your life more stressful.

Then what does it mean to be balanced?

And what about all those guys and girls who flirt around during the lecture and still get the best marks in the class? This is something I've seen also during secondary school and before... Are they hyper-geniuses or what?

Well at least there's one person who can actually focus on studying. When I'm in a lecture I lose interest after 5-10 mins and spend the rest of the time looking round and staring blankly, with my head on my arms, looking straight at the lecturer, but not following a word. But at the same time not day dreaming. Just not thinking or doing anything. Totally lobotomised.

They probably do lots of work in their spare time and don't actually learn anything in the lecture I guess.

I seriously want to know how anyone gets away with that in a lecture. There are only about 30 people in mine so I'd be so rude and totally obvious if you were flirting with anyone.

That's the crazy thing though. I chose to come here because I'm interested in this s**t and I enjoy the subject.

There's about 50/60 in mine at most times, and I think there's over 100 in Natural Hazards. Not all of them geologists :p:. It's exceptionally popular. Who doesn't like to study giant meteorites wiping out dinosaurs? Or massive earthquakes flattening Japan? Plus a lot of people come for the lecturer. One of the funniest guys at the uni most people reckon.

Do Engineering - you don't get pretty girls in the lectures.

I've developed my note-taking skills to such an extend that I can listen to the lecturer and note stuff at the same time, and yet still be thinking about something else. Sort of automatic. One of the most useful skills I've ever developed.

That's still small enough for people to see what you're up to though

Well not in our lectures. I've sat doing the sudoku in the Metro in the third row back before and got away with it.

To be balanced means organising your tim so you have time for both social and work, it doesn't mean doing them both at the same time!! Why did you think it did?

Well of course you 'got away with it'- what are they going to say? It's not like you have to be there, they're probably just laughing at the fools who pay £6k a year to get an education then waste an hour not listening. Either that or they feel really offended- that's the main reason I wouldn't do it, I'd just feel really rude ignoring someone I'd specifically gone somewhere to listen to.

Nah, I've seen them 'shaming' other people so I don't think it's out of embarrassment, or being offended, or laughing at me. Just that they haven't noticed me doing it.
Are you telling me you've never missed stuff going on in a lecture because you can't be bothered to concentrate, or just haven't turned up full stop, because you can't be bothered to go into that lecture on that particular day?
