What is the nightlife like at Bristol University?

I am thinking of putting Bristol down as my firm choice for university. However I am unsure of whether Bristol University offers a good night life and social life. I am very social person I love to go out and enjoy myself. Which of The halls offrer the best social life and night life? Also generally just what is it like? Thank you

I'm not at the uni but I know that Bristol's nightlife is solid, even though it's only a city of 600,000 it punches well above its weight and has a big club and music scene, especially with regards to slightly weird electronic music - as far back as the 90s it was a big centre of trip-hop and more recently purple sound.

Being a huge city, yes, it has plenty of all kinds.
This is actually also a concern for me. I was thinking of firming Manchester over Bristol because I'm afraid I'll be disappointed by the night life in Bristol.

Bristol nightlife is great. Not as boozy as somewhere like newcastle but just as much going on. basically you have lots of different music scenes in bristol which means loads of different clubs to go to depending on what you like. Theres an area called the triangle which hosts Bunker (fresher favourite) Lounge (cheesy as it comes) and lola lo's (again very cheesy) but then theres also places motion, lakota, thekla, Basement 45 and timbuk 2 which all host big acts and different nights. So theres cirque du soul, itchy feet, sub soul, just jack and way more that take place at all of these places. They're ticketed events but usually around £6 although some are nearer £20 but theres so many of them they are a good chance from a normal night out.
It is positively Bristolling with excitement
Are you lot mad? My friends are considering not picking Bristol because the nightlife will be so distracting. It is infamous for its huge parties, weekly pill popping and heavy house/dnb nnights. and plenty of hot people

If you're into that scene. Bristol is druggy but you don't have to be. At places like Pam Pam's Syndicate and Bunker you would never see anyone drop and even those clubs infamous for that kinda thing like motion you don't have to drop to enjoy it. Personally I never have and still manage to go out and have a good time. Also students got in for a reason. Everyone works insanely hard and come exam people truly don't go out, most of my corridor were working 9am-10pm everyday and then heading to bed. People balance work and nightlife, its only distracting if you're easily influenced and taken in really, it doesn't have to be

Would you say Bristol nightlife is quite expensive? Like closer to London prices?

Not London prices at all, save for a few expensive bars especially at weekends and non-student nights at clubs when the locals are out.
Clubs are obviously more expensive generally, but otherwise sticking to typical student holes will be relatively decent prices; and pre-drinking! (Just perhaps not northern prices either).
The night life should be the least of your concerns, the fact its rammed with private school kids and is known as practically the most 'rah' university in the UK should be the reason you're worried.

But if you can get past the fact you'll be asked 'what school did you go' very regularly in freshers week, you'll have a banging nightlife there.

Bristol nightlife is solid! Even more so if you're into House/Dubstep etc :2euk48l:

I'm from Bristol, though not a student there. I LOVE going out in Bristol - there is so much going on all the time, from clubs to bars to music venues and then you have the hippodrome and Colston Hall for comedy, music and a whole other range of things.

You have The Fleece for also sorts of music, the O2 academy and don't forget they're about to start work on an arena here as well so hopefully we'll get big acts without having to travel.

Price wise, it is no where near London prices but it won't be as cheap as say up north. That said, I spend only around £20-25 on a night out including lifts home, without predrinking (wetherspoons is our starting point haha).

Bristol is great, there's always something going on - certainly don't worry about that!
Torn between uni of birmingham and uni of Bristol....

Just speaking generally here, Bristol has a bit of a reputation for being snobby. I'm a bit worried if I go to Bristol I won't be with people I particularly like or get on with because I'm not into rowing and playing rugby etc. I just feel I'd make better friends who I actually like at Birmingham because it's not as "posh". I know the point of uni is to get a degree but you also need the social side if you have to live with people for three years.

Any comments?

(also everything I've said is just things I've heard or read and i am merely asking questions to find out more information)

1)Do you get many people at Bristol who didn't go to a private school and are of working class?

2)where do do studnets usually live in their second year at Bristol and how much does it cost?

3)Are there places in Bristol where it's just full of studnets (like selly oak in Birmingham)?

4)whats student life like if your someone who likes to go out a lot at night? Anyone ever been to motion?

5)is it possible to answer if you'd have a better social life at Birmingham or Bristol?

Answers:

1. Yes, lots - but why does it matter? I am from a working class background and state schooled and get on just as well with people who are from a private school background? I think you are reading far too much into stereotypes. Yes Bristol does have a lot of people from private schools but they aren't any different from you or I! You will get stuck up idiots at any university you go to and they will be in the minority.

2. Either in Cotham, Redlands, The Triangle or Clifton generally speaking. All of which vary between a 1 minute - 20 minute walk away from the uni and all of those areas have loads of students in.

3. Yes - Stoke Bishop has 6 halls and over 2000 students alone just there, it's brilliant. A side from that anywhere on the triangle and around the university is just full of students.

4. It is amazing in Bristol. I have lived in Bournemouth and in London, both of which are great nights out also, and Bristol is fantastic. Not expensive, tonnes of clubs and has places that appeal to different tastes. Yepp been to motion a few times, prefer other places but motion can be great fun - depends on what you like.

5. Bristol social life would be hard to beat, can't answer for Birmingham.

Overall, Bristol has a better reputation and is more prestigious than Birmingham, that itself is a big reason if you are quite a career orientated person. Social life Bristol is brilliant so you definitely don't need to worry about that - just do the right thing and firm Bris.

Is the Bristol drug culture quite in your face? I was watching the ubtv video on YouTube. Also would you say the clubs are quite safe?

1) As Unsworth rightly said, that shouldn't be a concern. This is a huge uni and if you are going to dismiss anyone of a different 'social' status to you then you won't be making many friends anyway with that kinda assumption.

2) In addition to Unsworth - some people stray a little further towards Hotwells and the rest of whiteladies road.
Cost varies on the size and how nice, mine for instance is £415pm and next year is £435pm; not including bills. Generally I'd say expect to pay £100+ weekly.

3) Suffice to say as a student you will not be meeting many locals. Nights out on the weekend, or summer are the rare times clifton is not filled with us lot.

4)-

5) I've only been out in Birmingham very little at conferences, and not in studenty parts butI'd say it's not significantly cheaper, bristol has a lot more choice too. What I've seen at Birmingham is more spaced out, (I could be wrong in that regard.)

And only to echo Sam, Bristol is a more prestigious uni regardless, coming in the top 100 world reputation ranking.
I understand being nervous but don't exclude a better uni on a few hang ups over private schoolers.

Not if you don't go to druggie clubs. (Lakota, Motion, Thekla(?)). Aside from my irritating housemates, I couldn't say it's in your face unless you put yourself in those places.
I'm not sure what you mean by safe but generally yes. Those further out towards St.Pauls etc. (Like Lakota) are ones I'd be tempted to say may be less safe but that's only due to hearing my housemates come back in at 7am, high, from a less safe area than where the other clubs are.

Can I ask what accommodation you stay/ed in? Thanks :-) I'm thinking of Goldney although I don't want to miss out the social aspects of Stoke Bishop I think it seems too much for me

I used to be in Wills.
Goldney's a very popular and big enough hall that it's rather sociable, just means there's less opportunity to socialise inter-hall.
Wills is a similar size and I can't say I socialised inter-hall that much anyway. Depends what other factors you put into it I suppose :-)
