Hull/York Medical School

This is probably going to sound really silly but could anyone explain why the medical school is Hull/York and what does that mean in terms of the medicine course- do you have to go between hull and York or is it just you apply to hull/York then choose which one you want to go to or have I completely got the wrong idea?
