Oxbridge Maths Interview Questions - Daily Rep

This is the big list that e-unit kindly reposted as part of his Oxbridge guide.

Maybe we can work through some? My interview is on Tuesday, and a lot of them I don't recognise. Spoilers next to the ones I've worked out.

Mod: Please note that discussing current interview questions is against the rules (and generally against your own interest, since you're only giving information to "the competition")!

We've decided to allow this thread to remain because it's been around for ages, the list of questions here is not particularly current, and in my personal opinion, many of these questions are unlikely to be asked under the current system. So it's really more a list of "interesting questions to think about, some of which are the kind of thing that might come up in interview".

But please don't abuse that decision by making lots of "this is what I got asked in my interview" posts or we may have to reconsider. Thanks.

There's the big list :smile: I'm typing in my solutions so far now
Reply 3
Which ones have you *not* done?
Reply 4
So far I haven't done any other than the proofs by induction - only got them an hour ago so haven't properly looked through them yet though.
79)

Let x = 0.999...

=>x = SUM(9*10^-k) for 1=<k=<n i.e. SUM is a sigma with the limits as stated
=>x = (9/10)SUM1/(10^k) for 1=<k=<n-1

Now use the sum of a Geometric series, a=1 and r=1/10

=> x = 9/10((1-(1/10^n))/(1- 1/10)
=>x = (9/10)(10/9)(1-(1/10^n))

Now using the sum rule, 1-1/10^n ->1 as n-> infinity
and then by product rule, x->1

So 1 = 0.999... QED.

Wow, you weren't kidding when you said the list was big. Here's the last one: in any 4 consecutive numbers there will be a number divisible by 2, a number divisible by 3, and a number divisible by 4 - so their product will be divisible by 2*3*4 = 24.
36. Integrate 1/(1+x2)dx

Let x = sinhu

And it should work out nicely
Integrate and differentiate xln(x).

Integrate:

By parts,

Let u = logx dv/dx = x
u'=1/x v = x^2/2

uv- INTvu'
=(logx)x^2/2 - INT(x/2)
=log(x)x^2/2 - x^2/4
=x^2/2(log(x) - 1/2)
46. Integrate 1/(9 +x2)

Use substitution x= 3sinhx

I need to look up integration by parts - we only did integration of straight polynomials in school...
43) 2!
3. Square root of i

e^it = cost + isint

=>e^ipi/2 = i
=>root(i) = root(e^ipi/2)
=e^ipi/4

43) 2!

I think they mean how many zeros in the resuly of 100 factorial :smile:
17. Prove 4n - 1 is a multiple of 3

This is true if the difference is divisible by 3, i.e.

4^(n+1) - 1 - (4^n - 1) is divisible by 3. So we have

4^(n+1) - 4^n
=4^n(4-1)
= 3*4^n

Hence is divisible by 3.
Well bugger me!

Plenty of 2's, how many 5's?
1. Differentiate x^x

Notice that x^x = e^xlog(x)

By chain rule, R = xlog(x) => dR/dx = 1 + log(x)

dy/dR = e^R
=> d/dx(x^x) = (1+log(x))e^xlogx
=(1+logx)x^x

71.
INT xsin2x
let u=x, u'=1, v=-0.5cos2x v'=sin2x
INT = -0.5xcos2x+INT(0.5cos2x)
=0.25sin2x-0.5xcos2x
Reply 18
I'm gonna say 24 zeros for 100!

Does this remind you of your interview kaiser_mole? What kind of things did they ask you?
Reply 19
