My vision

I've never known exactly what my eye, what are they actually called dimensions or something. The thing about the strenghs. Like poeple say their eyes are something over something. I really don't know what it's called.
Anyway, a few weeks ago I went to the opticians to get some prescription googles for swimming and I asked the receptionist if I could have something telling me what my eyes were. Anyway, can anyone interpret this
In my right eye I have Sph:2.75, Cyl 0.50, Axis 165 or 16.5 I don't know.
In my left I have Sph 2.50, Cyl 0.25 Axis 62 1/2
I know that my left eye is stronger than my right but that's it. What do all those values mean?

Hey there Matt,

Sph is the spherical portion of your prescription - it tells you how near- or far-sighted you are. As you're young, I presume that they're actually negative figures, -2.75 and -2.50, respectively, thus representing nearsightedness. Sph's measured in Diopters, so if you ever get a prescription with a "D" row/column, you'll know it's the same thing as Sph.

You've got three sets of numbers, because of your astigmatism. Astigmatism causes a directional blur, so the next two figures are crucial to getting corrective lenses.

Cyl (for cylinder) is the degree of astigmatism you have. As with Sph, it's measured in diopters, can be either positive or negative and the more it differs from 0, the more astigmatism you have.

The Axis - a number between 0 and 180 degrees - tells you the orientation of your astigmatism. The Cyl value on its own is not enough to create the ideal lenses for you; you have to know the precise location (no, don't say "my eye") of the difference in curvature is taking place.

Comprehende? Bien!

No it's in the distance column. I first had problems seeing things far away. Now it's both beyond about 10cm lol. And no, I don't really comprehend :p:.

I didn't even know you could get prescription goggles

What's wrong with wearing lenses and normal goggles? That's what I do and it's done me no damage!
