Bullied because i'm a geordie

I'm 16 and was born in Newcastle but moved down to London about 2 years ago because my dad had work here. Ever since I joined my new school some people have been taking the piss out of my accent constantly and it's really starting to get me down. There's nothing I can do about it and if there was why should I. How do you cope with this type of bullying or just bullying in general? I've tried talking to my dad but he say it's to be expected and try not to be so sensitive but I think this is the wrong thing to say.

Just ignore it, nothing wrong with being a geordie, I got stick as well at school because I was from Birmingham but i just laughed it off.

have a dig about their accent back. jesus i can think of about 10 things off the top of my head why people from london are up their own bums (no offence guys!)

be happy that your different and use it as a weapon on your side. Ignore the comments - they are just JEALOUS.

seriously i dont think iv ever met anyone that would take the piss out of an accent unless they were secretly envious that they all sound posh and gay. I get it all the time from my dudes in my flat cos im from wigan and they are all from kent or somewhere.

dont let it get you down chuck.

Least we can talk properly :p: we don't say bath the way it sounds like it has an r in it.

Geordies pwn.

Ignore.

i get told i talk like a commoner ALL THE TIME. and half the time thems lot cant tell what im talking about. I love it.

They all say 'turrah' now instead of 'goodbye' (puts on posh london accent)

Just laugh it off. They're probably not even intentionally trying to offend you. One of my mates is from just outside Newcastle and we all take the piss / do impressions of him all the time. It's not intended to be offensive.

Try to laugh it off - the same has happened to me, and in retrospect it really doesn't bother me because of the sheer stupidity required to actually bother about such a thing. I was born in Glasgow, lived there for 9 months, then lived in Nottingham for six years and nobody took much notice of my Scottish accent (and I have always had one despite growing up in England); with the exception of one Welsh bitch of a teacher.

Afterwards, I move to the East coast of Scotland and go to a posh prep school; and I constantly got the piss taken out of me for having a Scottish accent there. Terribly ironic.

Sadly it seems to be the popular thing to rip the mick out of Scousers and Geordies, it should be the other way round and its cool to rip southerners as they deserve it

The Geordie accent is awesome. Don't let those idiots get to you.

The best (and probably only) thing you can do is laugh it off, and try to use it to your advantage. If you can joke about it and show that their words don't bother you, they'll soon get bored and leave you alone. People may even end up admiring and respecting you for being unique.

And anyway, if your accent is the only thing that they can find wrong with you, you're quite lucky. There are a million worse things that they could do or say.

Everyone here at uni mocks the Geordie by asking him to say biker grove but he just laughs it off by asking us to say glass and then he bursts into laughter.

Would not worry about it mate its all in jest so just laugh it off.

Hey, at least your accent is sexy, they can't say that about theirs.

The geordie accent is the most gorgeous accent in the world. Could you ring me so we can discuss this further????

Reply 15

Unless they speak RP, you can quite easily take the mick of the London accent too!

However, I will not stand any insult against RP ;p.

Do you have any friends at the school? I would say to them I couldn't care less about your comments. Quite immature for 16 year olds to be saying things, I doubt the school would be helpful if reporting the bullies. These websites http://www.childline.org.uk/Bullying.asp, http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/specials/bullying/default.stm and http://www.dfes.gov.uk/bullying may help you decide what to do against these morons.

Damn those Southern fairies who don't know what it's like to be cold!

Introduce them to Ross Noble

They're probably just jealous as Geordie accents are well sexy!
