It depends almost entirely upon your interests, at least presuming that you want to progress to a PhD (if not, faculty reputation is a non-issue, and the entire question is merely shifted to one of general reputation). Cambridge has perhaps the best intellectual history programme in the world, Durham and York have strong Medieval programmes, Edinburgh have substantial faculty in Economic & Social history and Modern Conflict, KCL a specialism in European History, and so on.

What period of History? Or are we talking generic MA courses?

As for job prospects, depending on what area you want to go into, I'd argue (having been on the back of numerous job rejections with a MA in History, granted whilst in the middle of the recession), a History MA doesn't get you much further forward.

Is it frankly better with a PhD?

What about degrees from Oxbridge/LSE, does the "brand" give better prospects than a BA?

York has good funding opportunities for Medieval history. Although prestigious in history, Durham and KCL have none.

Can't tell about Manchester yet.

OP, tell us your area of interest (Medieval/Early Modern, Gender/colonial studies, Military/diplomatic history, political history, European/American/Asian history etc.) and what do you want to do after?

PhD? Not really - speak to anyone trying to get employment out of Academia and the word 'overqualified' is bandied around a lot.

As for Oxbridge/LSE (what IS the fascination with LSE on here?!), I have no idea, having been to neither. All depends on the job, person, CV, what day of the week it is...
