Will UK rap artists ever have sustained mainstream appeal?

While homegrown UK rappers do break into the mainstream every now and then (the recent examples that come to mind for me are Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah), compared to the US there is a very small mainstream UK rap culture. It is in fact easier for an American rapper to become popular in the UK than it is for a UK rapper to become popular in their own country.

My question is this: do you think UK rap artists and UK rap in general will permeate mainstream music in this country in a similar fashion to how US rappers have permeated the mainstream in America? Furthermore, do you think it is important for UK rappers to be able to break into the mainstream for a consistent (rather than temporary) period or do you think this will compromise the art form?
