The ICT grade boundaries say 72 UMS for an A* but 48 raw
does this mean to get an A* on the exam i need 72 marks because i struggle to get more than 55
i dont understand the diffference..

UMS (universal marking score?) is a converted mark adjusting the raw mark for difficulty. so no, you need to get 48 marks in the paper to get 72 UMS
