Why are people so reluctant to help each other with their studies?

Helping other people does not make your grades any lower.

If anything, explaining something to someone else could actually help you identify flaws in your knowledge, and also reinforce what you know.

SO ..my question is..what is it that makes people so defensive with their work?

After all, we're all students here, we are the student body. and we will all reach the finish line together.

I guess because they might have tried really hard to understand a topic whilst someone else hasn't bothered to try and then just wanted someone else to explain it to them. They might just see all other students as competitors and by them not achieving as much, the grade boundaries are lowered making it more likely they'll achieve the higher grades

Sorta does.
Think about it, you'll help somebody and therefore he will get a better mark.
Better overall marks = higher grade boundaries.
Higher grade boundaries = your grade may be lower.

I've always found my fellow students more than helpful and I'm happy to reciprocate. However I would hand out my essays to anyone for fear of plagiarism.

Because some people who do help end up being used and abused by lazy people who can't be bothered to do the work themselves and expect things to be handed to them.

Speak for yourself Jimmy. The other day I helped my sister find the common factor for her maths homework.

Because I've done the work and made the effort to compile my own notes, I'm not just going to give it away just cause you couldn't be arsed. My sweat, blood and tears went into that work

Perhaps because they don't want to; that reason should suffice and your not entitled to a further explanation.
