Tomkins and Jones aside (and no Kane) it's not particularly surprising to me.

Attacking full backs who have made attacking contributions in a top side. Ivanovic has been Chelsea's worst defender arguably, though makes a lot of attacking contributions.

Cazorla, loads of penalties, and a lot of assists and goals. Same with Fabregas with assists. Pantilimon has loads of saves. Very statistical which touches the surface.
Yeah, I also suspect that the scoring system rewards attacking defenders over defending ones. But the thing that always fascinates me about statistical analysis is that it's systematic - the same criteria which put Hazard, Sanchez, and Fabregas at the top (which no-one finds controversial) also put Jedinak up there!

By the same criteria that Koscielny and Ivanovic do well (who many people have in their team of the season), Jones and Tomkins do even better.

Bolasie > Hazard? Interdasting
Bolasie is a very underrated player. Hazard is top class indeed but he's not having his best season and seems tired in the last weeks.
Well, maybe I am a little bit biased so fair enough

For similar reasons, there are never consistent goalkeeper and defender Ballon D'Or winners. Cannavaro was a farcical shout back in 06, and no 'keeper has won it since Kahn.

Has a defender or goalkeeper ever deserved it, since Kahn?

Neuer has been playing at a level that would have won him a Ballon D'Or pre-2008, just his bad luck I guess. I can't think of any other player that's actually deserved one though?

Definitely not. I'm not a massive fan of defenders being named footballers of the year, either. It just doesn't make sense. The Ballon D'Or is for the best footballer. By definition, defenders are rarely as good at football as attackers.

Tackling, positioning, marking etc are as much football skills as shooting and dribbling

I agree. Think there was a period where there was a larger abundance of top defenders than attackers (mid 2000's). We've now moved into a period of rare defensive competence (you can probably count top CB's on your fingers).

Individual awards are for individuals, defending is more about being part of a unit rather than individual qualities, where as attacking allows for much more individuality.

Lampard yeah but Chelsea conceded 15 goals in the league. Closest claim since Neuer this season anyway.
