Dyslexia

Hey everyone

I've been finding uni really hard for the past 3 years - I've failed every year and have been finding it really hard to learn new things and concentrate on new reading for my course to the extent that i've kind of given up on it.

I have been wondering why it seems so hard and i've been searching the web to find out why. Looking at various websites on dyslexia I match many of the symptoms (although i know that self-diagnosis is never a good thing), such as:

Difficulty figuring out left and right
Being excessively quiet
Finding reading out aloud hard
Stuttering under stress
Having probs with time management (i'm quite often late for things)

As well as having to work disproportionally hard as other people to learn new things.

I've never enjopyed school and find making new friends really hard. Recently my dad said 'you just seem like you have no motivation for anything' and that's not true, it's just that when i'm doing new things i find it really hard to do them so i can be selective about what i choose to do.

Recently i've got really depressed and angry because i'm stuck in a rut and don't see myself progressing in life.

However (and here's the twist!) i've always been really good at english and english lit, which theoretically i shouldn't be?! As i've dropped out of uni til next yeari can't go to uni counsellors so can i go and see someone on the nhs?

Can anyone offer any ehlp?

Thanks

there is a test you can take to determine whether you are dyslexic or not. i suggest take it to find out

I'd see a doctor if you're really worried, but to be honest, those symptoms could apply to anyone thats a little bit shy or self conscious, they don't sound overly serious. A doctor is the best place to answer your worries.

what exactly do i say to a doctor? i'm not the best at explaining things and i'm not the best at talking to doctors?

Reply 4

"I think i have dyslexia" would be a start.

thankyou 3232.

that is of precisely no use whatsoever.

does anyone have any experience of dyslexia on here?

Seriously, doctors have had enough experience of patients diagnosing themselves online or worrying about symptoms that they will know how to handle the situation when you say 'I think i have dyslexia'. They will then ask you questions about why you feel that you have and then simply say what you've written above. Doctors are pretty good at taking the stress out of talking to them.

i actually agree with 3232. just say i think i have dyslexia and ask him for information about the test you can take. my friends are dyslexic and they found out through the test

You can go to your doctor and they can review you if they think you need the test or not and then refer you on.

Im at uni and went through the uni, my test is on the 9th of January. :frown:

tbh that doesnt really sound like dyslexia, especially if you havnt had any trouble with your english lit essays. *feels like a hypocrite because she got an a* in english lit despite being dyslexic*

hey,

I'm dyslexic, but also very good at english and english lit - although I find spelling very difficult I find grammer etc fine. The real problems I have are with time managment and self confidence, which seems to echo very much with you. Also, I cant 'do' directions, although I've lived in my town all my life, I still can't find my way around. Dyslexia isn't all about the reading and english part, but also about how long you take to process information, and deal with shapes (like turning 3D objects around in your head). there should be a disabilities manager or learning difficuties department at your university, if you go along there they should give you some good advice. Although a GP would be able to help, their not the first person I would turn to.

Hope this helps and good luck!

How is that of no use? It makes more sense than going there and saying 'I think I have schizophrenia'

It is like dyslexia.

When I had my review, they asked me allsorts of questions and what she said the symptoms she has are were the basis for some of the questions they asked.

My maths and reading are really bad but I can spell alright. (yeah its not great but its only I's and E's i have a problem with!) So its different things for all dyslexics.

yes its different for everyone but the op seems to be looking for something to blame for the fact that they simply didnt do the uni work.

There's a programme called the 'Dore Programme' which can help those suffering from dyslexia improve. Think their centres test people too for Dyslexia. Maybe you could give it a try?

Quickest way to get a test is to look in the yellow pages and find a private dyslexia clinic. It will cost around £140...

You might be granted more time in exams, a laptop, a special recording device (:s-smilie: that was what I was recommended :p:), etc...

hello, i'm the op (obviously!)

yes, i am looking for something to blame because something's wrong, and i think it may be this? it's not that u can't do the work, it's that i can't organise myslef to do it nor ask for help as i'd feel like an idiot for doing so , if you catch my drift??

forget dyslexia, thats you problem there in bold. even if you do have dyslexia there is no miracle cure. you need to go out and help yourself and tbh nothing in your posts suggests that you have any problem other than self motivation.i know i sound harsh but there are so many people at uni who are there waiting for you to ask for help. its no bodies fault but your own if you dont take the initiative and go sort it out.

hi

but don't you see, i don't value myself highly enough to do that. i'm in a rut and i don't know why!

then get out and bloody well do something about it. accept that you probably arent cut out for uni and go get a job with training and prospects (or at least try) or maybe a part time course in something that interests you so that you can earn some cash at the same time.
