Coeliac Disease

Hi,

A few months ago I was told that I have coeliac disease, meaning that I cant eat any gluten. I've never heard of anyone with it, although apparently it was quite common, and dont really know how to manage it around friends. When I'm out with them it's really difficult to eat, especially when I'm at their houses as everything seems to have gluten. It's not like a nut allergy where the effects are obvious and immediate, and people find it very hard to understand, and I feel like such a hypocondriact - although all the medical people are assuring me its very dangerous to eat gluten, even in tiny amounts. I was just wondering how other people expaline it to their friends and go about eating in public! Also, I was wondering how bad it is to actually eat gluten, the times when I have by accident don't seem to have had such bad effects.

Thanks ever so much,

Ejay

Woohoo! You're special like me!

I take it you've found the coeliac society? If not, join! They send you loads of useful stuff.

I just tell peope that I'm allergic to gluten, which is found in wheat. Then, if they need it I explain that's made into wheat flour and used in loads of stuff. Generally, they try to understand and are extra-careful.

With eating in public, try to call places in advance to explain. And the coeliac society have a bit where people can say how good places are, so you can see where would be a good place to go.

If you eat a tiny bit, it won't be a disaster. But your villi in your intestines get paralysed, and take ages to recover. So if you continually slip up, they won't be functioning properly, and you won't be as well as you could be. As you've only been newly diagnosed, your villi will have a lot of recovering to do, so you must be extra careful and don't eat anything if you;re the teensiest bit unsure.

my uncle and my friend both have it. The shops are quite good now, they sell a lot of gluten free things, special gluten free ranges and stuff, I always get it for when my friends coming round!

http://www.vegsoc.org/info/gluten.html - may help and there is a devoted range of gluten free in Sainsbury's. Your friends would be understanding and helpful, take products round - they might enjoy them. As for restaurants etc some places will state the ingredients, others you are best to ask than not say anything.

Products I have bought have been from these companies Arnotts http://www.arnotts.com.au/products/TimTam.aspx, http://www.glutenfree-foods.co.uk/Glutano, http://www.trufree.co.uk/ Trufree and http://www.juvela.co.uk/Juvela

I'm Coeliac and eating out has never been a problem. I just ask the waiter/ress to ask the chef whats in the sauce or whatever (or just eat something plain that I'm sure theres nothing in) Becomes second nature after a while! I'm diabetic as well - its so annoying, everything thats lowfat and lowsugar have added gluten, the full fat are usually ok!? Grrrrr!
