Thumbsucking?

Scroll to see replies

I've never done it. My daughter doesn't do it either. Then again, neither of us had dummies - might be something to do with it?

I have no advice about how to stop really - just basic willpower I suppose.
I can hardly talk, I bite my nails. That's just as bad.

Not sexy. Not something to do around a prospective partner/FB.

And I don't rate it, embrassesment quotent aside. It's needy and shows a lack of mental maturity. But better than self harm *guilty face*

I used to suck my thumb when I was a kid. Did it until I was about 9? Never had a dummy, or a comfort "blankie". Wasn't that kind of kid. Just me and my left thumb. Daddy had to put masses of TCP on my thumb to make me stop.

I think your habit has become your addiction. You can get that cream stuff to put on your thumb ends, so when you go to suck it, it tastes all euggghh!! Thats just a suggestion.

lol I sucked my thumb until about the age of 12 and tried that yucky tasting stuff...didn't work though because I would still suck my thumb in my sleep and end up with a rotten tasting mouth in the morning.

In the end I had to tape my hand up so I physically couldn't get my thumb in my mouth. It was really important that I stopped because my front teeth were growing in an awkward position and one was further up than the other because the thumb has stunted its growth, plus I had a sore on my thumb that was constantly open because the skin was so damp all the time.

Luckily my front teeth straightened out after I stopped and now they don't look crooked at all.

Wear mittens. Even to bed. Every time you try and suck your thumb you'll get a mouthful of fur.

Kettle's on
You are probably orally fixated which could have resulted from early or delayed weaning from the breast.

Too much uni for you

I used to do it.. I stopped when I was about 9-10. My parents did lots of stuff to try to get me to stop - gloves, nail polish, taping. None of it worked. I think one day I must just of got sick of it. I do remember that it took ages for the skin on my thumb to heal if i'd cut it or something, because it was always damp. That was gross. I knew people who sucked their thumb until they were about 13-14... it looks a bit odd.

I think someone else here said it appears 'needy and lacking in mental maturity' which I'd agree with.

...since this has been revived and people are still discussing it......

I've never done it myself, but my mum's a teacher and knew a girl who did it frequently in class. It was just something to do with nerves for her - I bite my nails when I'm bored or nervous, she sucks her thumb. Apparently my mum brought it up during a parents' evening one year. When she saw my mum looking at her sucking her thumb the day after, the girl couldn't stop laughing

I personally think Francesco Totti looks rather cute when he does it in his goal celebrations, but that may just be me
