I'm sure a thousand and one people will disagree with me, but if its something that you're going to enjoy doing, something that'll teach you something and something that you'll get something out of then ignore your friends and go for it; its your life, don't let anyone else make your decisions for you.

It may not be a respected degree, mostly because people write it off without even knowing what it involves and though I can't say I know all of the precise details, it seems like something worth doing. Its definately not pointless, well at least not to those people who can be open-minded about non-traditional degrees.

Do whatever you think is right for you, listen to other people's advice by all means, but don't let them choose what you're going to do with your life  .

If anybody disagrees with that they are not worth listening to  What you said was good advice.

My friend was all set to go to Birmingham to study law but then decided it wasn't what he actually wanted out of his life. Anyway, he decided to do Sports Science with Business and he is really enjoying it. The business side is academic and challenging, and the sports side is what he enjoys doing and interests him. So, in conclusion, maybe you should see if you can combine it with a minor subject in something more general (such as a language, IT, business or management) so if you are worried that doing a sports degree is pointless, you have the other aspect of the course to develop broader skills in which will consequently give you more career choices when you leave.

Whether you feel this is snobby or not and what ever the merits of the course, the fact is that in the job market they are both looked down upon.
This might have been what Zapsta was getting at

The degree probably is looked down by quite a lot of recruitment people, who'd want a sports scientist in their surgery, law practice or financial company, but the point is, if someone's really interested in Sports Science, then they're not really going to want one of these jobs, and I'm sure that in the field they'd like to work in Sports Science isn't looked down upon.

Your post is totally irrelevant to what I have just said. I wasn't referring to how worthwhile I felt the degree was in the specialist field or how someone should take up the subject if they find it 'fun', I was trying to explain to AT why Zapsta's post is not as snobby as he first assumed, ie aside from if the degree is useful or not, or if one enjoys it or not, it is still looked down upon in the general workplace.
Now that you've brought it up though....would you like to tell me what type of jobs are available in the sports science field? I don't know much about it.

I think a lot of people go into physiotherapy and coaching of some sort.

Physiotherapy usually leads to a healthcare job.

It very much depends on what jobs people want to do, if you're doing some specific then the course/university matters more. If you have no idea what you want to do when you graduate then the biggest influence of getting a job will be the person

However if I was going to university purely to get a job then I wouldn't study a sports degree because of its 'percieved' reputation amongst 'some' emoloyees. However if I loved sports and want a job in it then why not?

I think the big difference when studying somthing like that is wehter you're doing it because you don't know what else to do, or you're doing out a genuine love for the subject.
God!!! I Can't Put Up With It Anymore!! Everyday I Hear People Abuse Media Degrees At Least Once, (or Read About It). I Think If I'm Already Feeling So Pissed And Destroyed Then I'm Gna Feel Even Worse When I Actually Start The Degree Course!!! I'm Really Really Really Really Sick Of This Media-course-perception Of England!! On The Other Hand I Wish I Had Known About It Much Earlier!!! This Has Been Hauting Me For Months And Months! I've Had Enough Of It!! Do You Know What I Actually Did?! I Got Sooooo Pissed Off That I Randomly Called The Rhul Admissions Office And Asked Whether They Still Had Some Places Left In Other Departments, And Was Told, yeah You Can Still Apply For Politics, So I Applied There, And After Writing Some Random Essay, I Got An Offer! (my Predictions Were Quite Convincing: Aaaa!!!) Made My Parents And Teachers Happy, Cos They Think I Have Finally Recovered My Wits And Chose A "proper Degree"! Gosh, Bunch Of Snobs! I'm Absolutely Unhappy With Politics, Although I Think I Can Manage It. Neither Am I Happy With Media Arts Any More Cos I Feel Really Inferior Everytime I Tell Someone I'm Gonna Do Media At Uni!!! But Recently I've Also Heard That Some Ppl In England Also Slag Off Politics??!! Stop That!! Its Killing Me!! So!!!! What Now???!!! I Hold Offers For Both Media And Politics, Which One Should I Take??!!! Confusion And Chaos Are Killing Me!! Am I Not Allowed To Feel Happy Just For Once???!! I Think God Hates Me, I Really Do!!!!

PS, PLEASE DON'T GIVE ME THAT "DO WHAT YOU LIKE"-KIND OF ADVICE, COS I HATE THEM BOTH!!! I WANNA KNOW WHICH ONE IS BETTER PRESTIGE-WISE! AND ALSO DONT TELL ME TO REAPPLY NEXT YEAR, COS MY JAPANESE RELATIVES ARE GONNA SCOFF AT ME FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!! (WELL THATS THE "JAPANESE" PERCEPTION: GAP YEAR STUDENT= LOSER!) I AM SICK OF THESE DIFFERENT PERCEPTIONS OF DIFFERENT CULTURES, MAN!!

Do something that will provide you with the most opportunities when you leave - I imagine with a politics degree you can still apply for jobs in the media, whereas many jobs in the politics field may not view media graduates very highly.

It is also important to do something you enjoy though - do you really want to spend 3 years of your life doing something you aren't interested in?!

To be fair, the only person I hear repeatedly harping on about media degrees and keeping any negativity alive is you!

Get over it! You have made a choice based on what you feel is best for you! Great! Now go away and get your grades!

Everyone is as entitled to their opinion as you are and if that opinion contrasts with your own, then heh! That's life! Life would be very dull if we were all clones with the same views as one another!

What are you gonna do when your Editor has a contrasting view to your own and blocks a piece of work you've done? Tell his he has no idea what he's doing?
