Why do I need Grade 5 Theory for Leeds College of Music?

Why do I need Grade 5 Theory?

This is one of most frequently asked questions here at LCoM. It’s one that I asked when I applied for the Music Production course as I felt at the time it might not be relevant, but now I’m here to tell why it is!

The reason you are asked to get this is because no matter which course you are taking, you will need a certain knowledge of theory as it is inter-weaved into most of the modules and is relevant to what you’re studying. Everyone on the course starts on the same level and moves upwards, so if everyone has Grade 5 Theory then it makes things easier for the students and the tutor to be able to discuss things with the relevant terminology and knowledge.

I’m my experience, having Grade 5 Theory and using it during my degree was invaluable and really helped me with not only my songwriting skills, but also with my collaborative work with other musicians.

Would you say the figured bass and harmony covered in Grades 6-8 are in any way useful for studying music at your university?

If someone has a Bsc in say, biochemistry, could they take a masters in music at your University provided they had proof of good technical ability with a diploma in music?

Hello!

Yes that would definitely help for a greater understanding, especially at Postgraduate level!

Here are the requirements for a Postgrad Masters course at LCoM:

A good honours degree in Music or a related subject, with an upper 2nd (2:1) classification or equivalent, or

Professional experience and a good level of music/music theory. (2013 HEFCE statistics show that only 56% of those who enter postgraduate programmes have a degree upon entry).

All suitable applicants are invited for interview and/or audition.

All international students must have a British Council English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0.

So I would say you have a good chance! If you want to email us at [email protected] with some more information on your musical experience then we can look it over and give you a clearer answer!

Hope this helps!
Jemma

Thanks for your response. What do you mean by "professional experience"?

Are you using the criteria of being paid to perform?

Reply 4

Professional experience could be any paid work you may have had within the Music Industry, or any work experience could be included with that.

On the website for a foundation it claims Music Theory Grade 8 is advisable. Is there any point accepting the unconditional offer for electronic music production if I'm not graded in music theory?
