Pharmacology Offers

Well I think this site is a little negligent of those pharmacology students out there. Could you please say any offers for pharmacology you have received:smile: or any rejections:frown:

This format would be useful

University

Offer (conditional, unconditional or rejected)
Condition (BBB etc)

(Ughh I feel so militant setting out guidelines)

Hmmmm.......no relevant reply in 9 hours.....maybe this is not a negligence on our part as members of this site, but could be an indication that there aren't many participating pharmacology students on the site?

Hello fellow Pharmacologist, dont despair.

Bristol - BBB
Newcastle - BBB

All my other offers are for Pharmacy.

My sister did pharamcology and I always read her text book, its really really interesting.

Im definitely putting Bristol down as my Insurance choice. Where have you applied? Any offers? Good luck and yes this forum is awful for pharmacology.

I've got a letter from UCL, saying that I have a conditional offer from them and that they'll send me another letter with all the conditions soon. It's almost two weeks, I got no other letter and they haven't updated my track either.

Its not so much that theres no interest in pharmacology, its that most students will see pharmacy as pharmacology plus more job opportunities.
I was gonna do pharmacology, but then i thought that pharmacy has way more job opportunities than pharmacology.

I was thinking about changing one of my backup choices to pharmacology at Bristol. Still got 5 days left till my welcome letter deadline runs out, so I need to hurry! If i dont like it, if i get in ill change course within the first 4 weeks. Also if I dont get into my other pharmacy options, ill do that.

king_britt, can you tell me about the course at Bristol and what the interview is like?

Thanks

Hey dude yeah of course I will.

First of all you DONT need an interview, which is fantastic as you get so sick of having to travel and prepare to interviews.

You DONT need to adjust your personal statement to cater for pharmacology, as this will detriment your pharmacy application a lot of people get rejected for not knowing the difference between the two at Pharmacy interviews.

I’m a big city kid, so that is why I applied to Bristol, as I found the lack of prestigious big city uni's with regards to Pharmacy annoying, so filled my space with Bristol.

With regards to the course its more biology based than chemistry, but obviously there is still chemistry involved.

Not a full timetable like pharmacy medicine etc.

Receive an offer about 2 -3 weeks after you apply.

With regards to job prospects, they are few for Bsc Pharmacology, hence why the fact that doing it at Bristol I ssoooooooo important because Bristol is regarded so highly with employers.

You will be taught at Bristol Medical School and other departments.

Hope that helps.

Don’t know a lot about Bristol except that the night-life is absolutely brilliant and the uni is regarded extremely highly.

Go for it and fill the space in with Bristol, in my opinion it will be better than spending four years doing pharmacy somewhere you won’t like or be happy.

Hey I got my letter dated December 7th after my interview on the 4th. I still have not heard anything! They seem to be taking their time. I have had firm offers from everywhere else except Kings College London, who just sent me a letter saying basically that they were going to take ages.

I have received offers from 5 of my 6, although UCL are being really annoying and have not actually told me what grades they want yet Grrr...

UCL
Pharmacology
Don't know
I really liked UCL. They were very professional. They were the only department which actually asked me science questions in my interview. (I also had interviews at Bath and Manchester) It should be my firm choice  Hopefully they offer me a high offer.

Manchester
Pharmacology
AAB
A in Chemistry and Biology and B in German
I liked manchester but i'm not sure if the general life sciences first year is such a good thing

Bath
Pharmacology
AAB
Including Chemistry
Bath seemed very professional and I liked the course. The only things which rang alarm bells were the fact that it is not in the Russell group and maybe not as well respected as some other uni's. Also I don't think I'd be happy there.

Bristol
Pharmacology
BBB
Including Chemistry
Bristol is good as an insurance, but I don't think I'd like to go there. The open day was a bit crap. They seemed to tell us more about the city than about the actual department

Cardiff
Pharmacology
BBB
Hmm this was just a space filler. It's to far away and I didn't like it.

Kings College London
Pharmacology and Molecular Genomics
Don't Know - they have not sent me anything
King's seemed nice and it's a well respected uni. I just hope they hurry up and offer seeing as my UCAS form was processed before the Oxbridge deadline.

I didn't have an interview there, but when I went to the UK for my Cambridge interview I spend a few days in London, and take the chance to have a look at UCL. I liked the department, enjoyed the visit and the course- it gives an ooportunity to do a year in industry between your 2nd and 3rd year, which is great. The optional subjects offered in the 2nd and 3rd year seem really interesting (e.g. drug design)
The worst think about UCL are actually those stinking trees that grow right outside the main building - everything else looks great. What worries me most now are the costs of living in London - they're pretty high for an international student

Only about 2-3 people a year go on a year in industry... so there will probably be some competition for the places...
Reply 11
I've heard that the entry for that is competitive, but I'm going to give it a try. Does it depend on your exam results, whether you can go on a year in industry? What are the requirements?
btw. are you a UCL Phramacology student?

I heard that it was competitive too. Where did you get your information?

At my interview they suggested that I try to take a placement

No, I'm not a pharmacology student... so i don't know the answers to those questions... but i copied some info from the website that may be helpful...

"Industrial Placement Year

Those students who are studying Pharmacology at UCL have the opportunity to carry out an industrial placement in a Pharmaceutical/Biotechnology company for one year, between their 2nd and 3rd academic year. During this year the student carries out a research project within the company, under the supervision of an industrial researcher. In general 2-3 students take advantage of this opportunity every year.
While not an integral part of the Pharmacology degree program at UCL, taking a year out in industry has many benefits for the student. These include:-

Experience of working in the industrial environment/sector

Experience of cutting-edge research and techniques

Acquiring generic and research skills

Salary

These skills make a student not only attractive to prospective employers in the pharmaceutical industry but also to prospective employers in other industrial sectors (e.g. Finance). In addition, a years research experience is highly valued by both final year research project, and PhD supervisors.
If you are interested in an industrial placement please contact Dr Dean Willis (GM05) at the end of your 1st year or in week 1-2 of your 2nd year. Available industrial placements are advertised on the 2nd year Pharmacology Students notice board (and this web page). Expected closing dates for these applications are between October-December of that year, however other position may become available throughout the year
It is important to note that, because of the benefits from taking an industrial year, there is a great deal of competition for placements, from students across the country.
Dr Dean Willis"

Oh cool cheers!

I have always pondered the question though, because some uni's like bath claim to practically guarantee a placement for pretty much every student. How the hell can that be possible? :s-smilie:

How long did it you guys to get offers from Bristol? I sent off my application around mid November and still haven't even recieved any acknowledgement.. :s-smilie:
Reply 16
Revenged- thanks for that. 2-3 people accepted is a great competition, but it's a great opportunity, definitely worth working hard in the first 2 years.
Well, I need to think about meeting my offer first, because it's damn high

Oh :s-smilie: That is a bit slow.

I applied just before the oxbridge deadline of 15th october, and I received an offer from Bristol on UCAS track on 9th November. Bristol don't tend to interview although if you do hear from them they will invite you to an open day. Maybe you should try giving them a call. I gather that they get quite busy with applications after november time, so thats probably why.

Good luck though!

PS Where else have you applied?

I've only applied to Bath & Bristol for Pharmacology, the rest are Pharmacy
