Cambridge Gossip

Not sure how much this site has been discussed here (if at all) but has anyone looked at the cambridge gossip website? Checked it out a couple of weeks ago and it seemed to have self destructed in terms of participation - the union hacks having hunted each other to extinction (a model that could be applied in the wider world perhaps? ) This is in contrast with the oxford version of the same site which appears to be flourishing (perhaps their hacks have entered some kind of natural equilibrium of back stabbing that keeps their numbers at sustainable levels?).

Just brought it up because theres a link been added to them both in the oxbridge forum (though oddly the cambridge edition doesn't seem to open for me anymore) - did/does anyone ever visit it? and is the union really that bad?

It was a wank site set up for some tw*ts to anonomously slag off people. If by gossip it was news then great, but it was gossip as in "lets start rumours about people/bitch about them"
They really just were nasty bitter geeks

Basically about 100 of the uni's 'hacks' were pre-assigned names & accounts to get them to join....

It's missed the point... although could become interesting if people used it for banter... a bit like this place...

Did you ever see it? it really was terrible.
Besides, the politcs of the union are a sickening old boys style pile of aristocratic shit.
I remember i tyhink last year when there were 4 candidates, all but the 'favourite' were disqualified, 2 of them because 'supporters' had sent emails on their behalf.
Way to win a union vote - send emails in support of your opponent in someone else's name...

Yeah that whole election was really lame - shame the person it was handed to on a plate now seems to effectively run the place like he owns it...

The union puts on some really good speakers and debates and can be a great place, but the people in charge could do with living up to their manifestos and actually running it for the members - lest the word 'openness' lose all meaning

btw shiny - take it you've battled the forces of hackism? do tell...

ITA. epitomises all that is wrong with Oxbridge. Elitist and outdated. Run by a bunch of cronies who all want to be prime minister and spend all their time plotting how to stab each other in the back. I went once in freshers week. Never again.

It hardly suggests anything is wrong with Oxbridge. The Union coexists quite happily with other societies, even if you yourself aren't content to leave its members to themselves. Disagreeing with the way it's run or disliking some of its members is only a reason for not going to it, not for hating it as well. Some of the people who throw around terms like 'elitist' and 'outdated' seem to do so just because they simply can't tolerate things which differ from their own images of how they should be. It would certainly be a shame if you leave university without having learnt how to put up with some minor irritations, like sitting next to some oaf at dinner.

I actually don't really understand this post. What did I say about sitting next to oafs at dinner? I am sure no-one from the union society would sit next to me at dinner anyway because thye don't liek people, with northern accents!

What I meant to say in simple English is, good students don't apply to oxbridge because they think it is old fashioned, discriminatory, public school only etc etc. In my experience this isn't true except among various factions of the union society. This is unfortunate because Oxford and cambridge Union societies are world famous and represent the University publically whether we want them to or not.

Sorry, the dinner thing was a reference to what shiny said.

It's not that good students don't apply to oxbridge because they think it's old fashioned etc. - surely they don't apply because they think it's old fashioned etc. and they're not prepared to put up with it. And it doesn't help if current students make a point of saying how they can't get along with some of the people here.

It really started off on the wrong footing. Basically the moderator thought people would love a site where you can anonymously slag people off, but it just got really immature and pathetic on Cambridge Gossip. It'll be relaunched soon, focussing more on being a site where you can sensibly air grievances about CUSU, the Union etc, as well as have a bit of banter. Oxford Gossip's doing well now, as there's things not just for union hacks but those interested in the music scene, thesps world etc.

It sounds like the Cambridge Union is a lot more outdated and elitist than ours. There is a dominance of Tories here running it, and plenty with a backstabbing agenda as they try to climb the greasy political pole, but members don't really care as they're treated to some legendary speakers (so far this term including Joshua Jackson and Teddy Sheringham) and good socials.

Don't know what CUSU's like, but if it's like ours it'll be the opposite extreme of the Union, dominated by lefties, but similarly have their own self-interest self-important agenda.

Thats a bit of an odd thing to say. Yes, they dont apply cause they dont want to have to deal with people with superiority complexes, becasue its intensley annoying. THe same way as people dont apply to london casue they dont want to have to put up with a noisy smelly city. Everyone has reasons for NOT applying to places, and i would say not wanting to be around arrogant twats who think theyre better than you is a valid reason. Although i dont think there are that many at college level, they probably concentrate at the union. I had some snotty nose public schooler tell me my school was shit last night, didnt appreciate it. Didnt like to tell her that her school was the scrutiest private school id ever seen, and that considering she didnt get any uni offers and i did, what ddid that say about her precious school!? This is what i dont like about private schools, the arrogant prats they seem to turn out at a far higher rate than other schools. And i can totally understand anyone that wants to get as far away from them as possible!
