I've got a few days in October in peads, surgical rehab and hospice so that's exciting. It's really hard to get MH shadowing but I am about to start volunteering on dementia wards, with Mind and in a secure CAMHS unit so that should be really good for seeing the two roles and which I want to do

What put you off about MH nursing? I feel like OT is way more holistic and much more 'me' but I'm just worried about getting a job at the end and there seems to be a lot more opportunities in nursing... tricky!!

Oh, you sound on the ball too- you've got lots of experience lined-up.

Yes, I like the 'holistic' stance that OT takes. I definitely feel the work MH Nurses do is needed and valuable, but for me I like the scope that being an OT offers. MH Nursing is clinical, there was alot of medication being administered during my shadowing placement but I didn't witness much positive interaction between Nurse and patient. OT is more focussed on the rehabilitation process (in a MH setting) and I like that the OT has more of a 'relationship' built on quality interaction with the client.

I think there are atill a good few OT jobs available, all the OTs I've spoken to said they managed to get jobs quickly after qualifying. However, there a definitely more Nursing roles available.

I think once I've started shadowing I should know.. OT's scope is so vast it's such an attractive feature!! Will have to do some deep thinking and try to chat to some nurses too!

Hi Chloe could you drop me your email as I'm applying for 2016 entry to same universities and would like advice. My email is [email protected]
Hi im hoping to apply for OT Cardiff in 2017 but would love to apply sooner.

Cardiff uni state you need GCSE science but UCAS states only English and maths. I have a D on science and i am resiting it in June but wont get results in time for 2016 entry.

Does anybody know if its worth applying this year without my science gcse?

Thanks

Hello ladies!!

I am applying to uni for OT Sept 16. I am a mature student at 34 now and will be 35 when I (hopefully) start. I have a hubby and 2 kids coming along for the ride too ages 3 & currently 8 months. I am on an Access course at the mo.

I do not have my GCSE Science grade C but have contacted all the uni's I am applying for and they will all accept me with the scince on my access course as long as I get distinctions!

I have already had 2 shadowing days with OT's in different settings and am waiting to hear back from another 2. I have loads of experience in a related field from working the last 18 years, so hoping this supports my app.

Good luck to all xx

It's biology, There are 21 credits available and I have to get 6 distinctions in place of Grade C. I am aiming for all 21 though. None of the uni's have said that I need GCSE Science when I have contacted them even though their entry requirements states that I do. Hope that helps x

Hi everyone!

I'll be applying for the Bsc in 2016. I'm leaning towards UEA and Plymouth so if anyone else is thinking of these I may see you at the open days  I should be easy to spot, as there don't seem to be many male students taking the Occupational Therapy route. I'm the only one in my Access class applying for OT...

Hi all, good to find a thread for people that are on an Access to HE course, mature students and applying to study OT! I have a media background and have been doing lots of volunteering to help support my application. I am considering a 2017 entry, but despite trying to find out about NHS bursaries for 2017, nobody seems to know if the OT course will be funded? Does anyone know if I run the risk of missing out on a funded course if I postpone until 2017? Thank you. Sarah :-)

Hi everyone,

I'm also going to apply for MSc Occupational Therapy. Haven't decided 100% where yet but thinking probably Derby and LSBU.

I have a degree in Psychology (graduated 4 1/2 yrs ago) and since then have worked as an Assistant Psychologist at a learning disability charity for adolescents and for private organisation specialising in childhood sexual abuse. I currently work as a Mental Health worker in an acute ward. Been following the clinical psychology route since I graduated but in the past year or so after working with some OTs and living with an OT student I've decided OT will fuel my interests more!

Only thing I'm worried about is money as the NHS bursary isn't really enough to live on so part time work will be necessary!

Anyone going to the LSBU open day this sat?

I think shadowing will definitely help you decide! I was debating between MH nursing and OT for a while until I started working in an acute mental health ward. The nurses do a great job but it is very clinical, all about medication, restraints and paperwork! Infact the vast majority of the time the nurses have to spend most of their shifts behind a desk doing care plans, admissions, discharges etc and it's the HCA's who are the most hands on with the patients. That's what put me off - plus shift work is TOUGH! Hope your shadowing goes well for you
Hi! Can I ask which charities you approached for shadowing, and where did you find contact details? And also which mental health OT shadowing you managed to find? I have little experience in this area so want to get as much shadowing as possible!

Hello, can anyone doing OT please give me details of the timetable? How many hours in class/how many days a week? Thank you
Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and to UK university education as well. I'm from California, USA but have taken great interest in the OT program at University of Limerick in Ireland (it's curriculum is recognized by the NBCOT, the exam that grants certification and clinical practice privileges in the USA). Just wondering if anyone else here is interested for Fall 2016, and if there are other MSc programs in the UK that are of reputation. UL is the only program I'm aware of in Europe that can transfer to USA. But I'm still learning as I continue my search, so any advice or information is very helpful!

Also, could someone explain to me the "general" requirements for MSc OT programs? As in, what's "GCSE" and will not having one hurt my chances of being considered and ultimately admitted? Thanks!
Hi I am at Salford, 1st year. Part timers are in two full days, 9am-4pm same ones every week (many are seconded and work the other 3 days as an OT assistant). The full timers are in the same 9-4 but will go to an extra day soon. On average they will do 3 full days a week 9-4 but have to be avaliable for 5 as some modules are more intensive. There is lots to do outside of uni too. Placements are full time. It's a great uni though and great course  good luck.
