2nd year compared with 1st year?

Hi everyone,

I just wondered what 2nd year at uni is like compared with 1st year both academically and socially? Does the workload go up much? Do people still go out all the time or is it more chilled? Thanks

My workload increased a lot between first and second year- and obviously in second year your marks count, so each assignment matters more. I also had a lot of group work, which is time consuming as it can be hard to co-ordinate everyone.

However, I still had time for work and an active social life- compared to third year when I had less time for socialising and left my job. You do have to be good at time management and prioritising though- and sometimes you have to accept you won't go out as much because everyone is snowed under with work.

People also tend to be a bit more financially savvy by second year, so may go out less or do less expensive stuff for this reason.

Okay that doesn't sound too bad. Do you mind me asking which uni you were at?

Hopefully people get over going out all the time, though I guess if my city had more nightlife I'd be out. :dontknow:
second year shows you just how time consuming uni can be.

The work load does increase somewhat dramatically in second year. From my experience, first year was very straightforward and not much more difficult than A-levels, it's the year where you adjust to uni life and learn how to write academic essays, exam technique and what lecturers are looking for in your work. It's worth nothing towards your degree for a reason!

I didn't put in a huge deal of effort in first year and still averaged a first class grade. However, second year was a real eye opener to the amount of work and study you have to put in to maintain your grade. I still had an active social life but had to manage my time way better than I did during first year. I actually came out with a higher average grade in my second year since I put in a huge amount of work as that year counted for a 1/3 of my degree!

Workload and difficulty increased again in 3rd year and my coursework/end of term exams reflected that. I still find time to let loose and have a decent social life, but it does decrease year on year. Just have my final exams left to do later this month and in May and I'm done with uni. It goes quick so make the most of it.

Wow okay thanks! I'll just be more concerned because obviously it counts and I really want a first if I can get it.
