Hi, I'm just looking through my quantum mechanics revision notes and I came across the production of x-rays. I understand it all except HOW the accelerated electrons create the x-rays. So if somebody could explain how the incident electrons create x-rays when they strike the metal anode I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Whoops, I forget to then change the title from what I was previously going to ask. Sorry!

Two ways:

Characteristic x-rays: produced when the accelerated electrons eject electrons out of the inner n=1 (K) shell of the target atom. The vacated shell places are filled with electrons dropping from higher energy levels and thus emitting x-rays with wavelengths characteristic of the difference between the drop in energy levels.

e.g. n=2 to 1 transitions produce K-alpha x-rays. n=3 to 1 transitions produce K-beta x-rays etc.

Bremsstrahlung radiation: e-m radiation is produced when charged particles are accelerated. The wavelength of the e-m produced is a function of the acceleration. When the incoming electrons have a high enough energy, the deceleration on striking the target produces a spread of e-m radiation at x-ray wavelengths.
