Intelligence Officer ...

Currently preparing to apply as an Intelligence Officer. Obviously not much can be/is offered on the details of this role and considering the title more a great deal exists when researching it.

Any thoughts/advice on where to look when gaining an understanding on the role?

There are a plethora of books covering the subject but nothing I can seem to find that speaks from a RAF perspective.

How much would I be expected to know?

I’m expecting a response along the lines of want to work intelligence should be able to find out about intelligence. I would obviously appreciate something a little more constructive if at all possible?

Have you tried to visit any stations to meet any for a chat?

What phase 2 training involves.
Where it is.
How long it is.

What you could expect as a first tour.
The typical roles you could go into/perform.

That was about the amount expected of me when I went through selection, successfully, for IntO, though it was a few years ago now.

I have, a few times, written up those answers on this site. A little digging should find them.

Thanks Drewski.

I will have a look for them later. I tend to only jump on here around lunch so in all honesty was a little lazy on that end.

As for base visits. No not yet. I will be going to the careers office early May to request this and I would obviously hope to get a few in before the ball really starts rolling as I'll be applying that same day.

I thought I noticed you were IntO.

Would you care to offer your thoughts on the role? I am still torn between Analyst and Officer but will definitely go for the higher rank just the other seems a little more interesting ...

Don't know about the RAF, but if you apply for the ranks (in intelligence) in the British Army you come out at the end of basic as a Lance Corporal. Career progression in intelligence for other ranks is quick. Obviously meritocratic, but quick.

Obviously nobody can tell you much about the role for security reasons. Find out as much as you can from the brochure your AFCO would have given you, and go from there. Social forums are useless and are full of walts.

You're applying for intelligence analyst. Obviously I'm not having a go at you, but a man/woman who has quick google at lunch to see what the role is about won't cut it.

Good luck.

Haha - I have definitely done a lot more than a quick google my main 'worry' really was having an absolute understanding of the role within the RAF.

I am actually very open to the Army and not entirely set as going in as an Officer and that is the current major debate in my mind. I obviously need to come to a serious conclusion on this ASAP.

Have a look at these videos below if you haven't seen them. I could not find a video that focuses in Int officer, but I expect you already know that in layman's terms he leads the team and makes all the big decisions. Oh and the emphasis in training has been moved away from (a few years ago) imagery surveillance and towards operational intelligence, where you analyse information from a whole range of sources. And don't think that if you become an intelligence analyst in any of the services that you will be in an office with all the gear. In operations, its not unlikely that you will be found carrying your rifle, rations, radio and possibly a downlink laptop and digging in for 10 days with a lot more than the standard 240 rounds thinking to yourself that the HQ has made a mistake and thought you were infantry.

Hi BarrattsMini,

It's ArmyJobs here! I see that you're interested in applying for the role of an Intelligence Officer which is awesome!

First of all you do the Commissioning Course at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Next you go on to a specialist course that prepares you to lead Intelligence Corps soldiers. As well as leadership skills you learn about the activities of the Intelligence Corps, including the operational and counter-intelligence roles. You need to master the same military skills as the soldiers you command. Officer training covers subjects like fieldcraft, tactics and weapons handling. After you master the basics you learn how to command soldiers in a Military Intelligence section. You learn to lead and motivate a group of soldiers engaged in operations around the world.

We'll be with you every step of the way as you move up the ranks. From the moment you begin your training you'll get all the support and encouragement you need to make a success of your career. Work hard and you'll soon get promoted, which means more responsibility and extra pay. And you'll have plenty of opportunities to get qualifications that are recognised by civilian employers.

The great news about this role, is that you will gain experience in a number of different fields:

Leadership

Investigation & research

Security

Combat

Computing/IT

Clerical/admin work

Human resources

Languages/linguistics

In order to apply for the role of an Intelligence Officer, you will need at least 180 UCAS points and 35 ALIS points at GCSE, (including a minimum grade C in English, Maths and a science or foreign language).
I would also take at look at this PDF for a little more information. http://www.army.mod.uk/documents/gen...aflet_RMAS.pdf
and this page will give you an insight into the Intelligence corps http://www.army.mod.uk/intelligence/intelligence.aspx

When you have applied you are welcome to get in contact with them on 01462 752339, and they will brief you on what you will need to research and read up on prior to attending their selection board.

Hope this helps, and I wish you all the best!

Thanks a lot PowelliteScum.

Some serious decision making to be made. I obviously have the requirements to apply for the Officer role (should probably mention that). Pro's and Con's to both entries I should think...

Good luck with whichever you choose.

A BIG pro is that you'll find very few people, if any, who would not recommend you go for Commissioned entry if you have the qualifications to do so.
