Oral sex precautions

Ok, i have just found a closed thread full of 'useful' opinions on oral hygiene and safe sex, and I'm frankly appaled at how far out some people were. So here's some clarification for you.

1) You can get certain STDs by performing oral sex on a person.

2) Some STDs that are present as sores or lesions on the skin, like herpes, HPV, and syphilis, may be transmitted to you by having oral contact with the infected areas. Other STDs that are transmitted by fluids or infected mucous membranes in the penis, like gonorrhea, hepatitis B, and syphilis, can also infect you orally (ejaculation in the mouth probably has little to do with it).

3) Helenia - year 2 - Neisseria Gonorrhea is a cause of sexually transmitted pharyngitis!!!

4) Has no one ever heard of those barmy creations 'dental dams' if you could catch stuff through oral sex then there would be no need for them...

5) Despite what any guy tells you, they STILL can feel throught the condom. The proof of the pudding is simple. simply say - its condom or nothing and 99.9% will put ona condom, and will certainly not be complaining during the act

6) 'Open sores/cuts in mouth' VERY misleading. we all have abrasions and cuts in our mouths pretty much all the time. we get them when we eat (think crisps for instance) when we brush our teeth. when we scrape our teeth on our lip/cheek. Hell, why don't you disbelievers try looking in the mirror and tightly pulling ur bottom lip down. u'll see just how many - and how close to the surface - blood vessels there are!

The moral of my message?
You CAN catch stuff - EVEN from those who seem 'clean'. If you're with a partner you don't know, don't trust, or don't know the background of, then use precautions.

Good night all
Jamie

Oh ****, of course! Can it go systemic from there though?

meh, guess I was a bit blase, but I still said what everyone else said, I just dislike being questioned and made to look stupid. And I REALLY dislike being told I shouldn't be a medic

Re. the prostitutes comment someone made - of course prostitutes use condoms, they don't have a sexual history from every one of their clients
It goes both ways, yes.

Yeh it goes systemic whether transmitted anally, orally, vaginally...
But only in about 2 or 3% of cases i think, it ususally is just a local mucousal infection.

That's what I thought.

fah, I only remember it because of the 'deep throat' connatations. I think there might be a nisseria pharyngitis too

Don't sweat it, you sound suspiciously stressed to me. Ah, one thing i won't miss - the cambridge exams!.

Neisseria pharyngitis is the first one you mentioned, silly!

And - can it get through the epithelial barrier or does it have to be damaged? If the former, my faith in my revision is screwed.

Yes, I am stressed. In 6 days I have my first pathology exam. We're doing well here.

Hehe, one of my friends had one of them (unused) last year and chased me round the DR with it. They scare me.

nah i siad N. Gonorrhea. N. Pharyngitis is another subtype of the bacteria which seems to prefer the throat a bit more. (like HSV type 1 goes for lips and type 2 for gentials [or vice vera cant remember which]

You have to remember firstly there is no hard and fast rules in biolgy. its all about scales of balance. if the epithelium is broken it massively increases likelyhood of infection, but theres always a hance even if unbroken, because there are always areas of microdamamge and microrepair.

What path options did u take..?
(i did immunology and virology plus a side order of parasitology. Yes, i love infectious disease )

Wtf? I don't think we have to know both types - there was only one Neisseria on our crib sheet from the revision session last week. And I thought your "N. Gonorrhoea is the primary cause of ST pharyngitis" was what you meant

God I'm stressing now.

I'm only 2nd year, so we don't get options in Path, though I did to the IDHPA course as one of my special options courses. Next year I'm doing Pharm, if I can pass this year :bawling:
Here's one for ya... don't fool around with people you don't know.

I thought I should learn all the constellations in the sky to chat up girls but now you're telling me I should learn everything about STIs. Maybe I should keep a little wallet with photos of people that have been contaminated. I'm sure all the girls will fall for that...
Ummm... I'll stop
