but anyway what is it like? you must be taking lessons? Do you get to study all the great stuff like Rumi, Hafez etc?

are irani hastam...
no im not having any lessons... i grew up learning farsi.. its my mother tongue language... are hafezo ina ham mikhunam khasty vasat falam migiram :tongue:

i just thought that beacuse there's no longer a country called persia... am i stupid! :redface:

i guess i just assumed that people spoke arabic in iran or something. oops!

It's no longer called Persia because it was renamed to Iran. It's still the same country (although it was an empire back then). Out of interest, the language of Afganisthan is also Persian.

woah! i didnt know persian was offered as an a-level - sounds really interesting - do u study it like french (u know, do the same themes and topics as in french and german a2 level?) ....and is persian spoken in iraq and farsi in iran or is it the same language but different names for it...im confused!

mayb some tribes speak persiAN there ... but their main language is pushto ... specifically kabuli pushto ....

Persian is Farsi, just different names. In Iraq, the official language is Arabic. Although if you travel up north, people would additionally speak Turkish and Kurdish, and if you travel down south, there would be a majority of people who speak Persian.

I can speak Arabic, and I'd love to learn Persian (I've been wanting to for like a year). Would it be hard to pick up?

Hmm.. I always wondered if it was worth getting a qualification in your mother tongue. I mean you can just as easily write that you're fluent in Farsi on your CV- unless it's purely for practise. :smile:

You wrote "fekr nakonam ziad be dard bekhore" in a previous post, I wanna try to see if I understood some of it (this is mostly guessing, btw!): "Do you think we'll be/achieve more in 'dard bekhore'"

I did it 3 years ago with my GCSE's..If you learn it from an early age it helps...I started learning it from 6...It's a really nice and deep language with culture when you actually study the literature...It was a challenge then... :biggrin:

lol um..i wrote 'i don't really think it's worth it'...i can speak a bit of arabic...

salamaleikum okhti..habibi...hayati...kabire..shokran..esmi shireen...and i can count to like 8 vahed ithnin falafa..lool is that even right? i got a friend from lobnan (sp?) and she taught me this song it goes like 'ya haba binishey lizahayatoo' wat does that mean?? i can also say the hamdo sooreh prayer and i know like enshaallah, mashaallah lol can u speak any persian?

btw if u can read or write arabic, persian will be relatively easy 4 u

"ya haba binishey lizahayatoo"? I have no idea what-so-ever what that means... It's probably because the Lebanese accent is really weird, although it's nothing compared to the Algerian/Morrocan/Tunisean accent. :tongue:

But everything else you said was completely correct (except for vahed -- it should be wahed :wink:

I don't know any Persian. Nothing. :frown:

It seems like a really cool language, and I'll hopefully start learning it next year. :biggrin:

If you compare Arabic to English, you'd find a lot of weird letters: 'ein, dhad, kha', ghein, ssad, etc. Is there anything like that in Persian?

Aaaaaaaahhh, i looooove arabic - it sounds soo nice when spoken! i wanted to do french and arabic at uni but changed my mind at the last minute! i can read it (well qu'ranic arabic and thats ancient, isnt it?) but thats about it....i know a few phrases that my friend has taught me (itfu aal al wishak - primarily to get rid off unwanted male attention!!) but thats about it. listen to quite a bit arabic music - it's actually kinda groovy and the old stuff ( Fairuz has a lovely voice) is good, too.
does Kurdistan exist?

Pashto and Farsi are very different. Pashto is a mix of Urdu and perhaps sanskrit.. but also uses some borrowed words. 55% of Afghanistan is Pakhtun/Pashtun and the rest, are mainly the farsi speaking population - tajiks and uzbeks.

Anyhow, sorry cant help you :smile:

But am sure, if you've spoken the language, and you know it fluently.. you wont have any problems!

hey guys

i did it last yr..it was ok..not as easy as GCSE lol the listening paper was like 'mahmood joon chi mikhay bokhori' and he was like 'ab' and then u get a multiple choice of water, orange juice and coke and u got to tick the right one...but it got so hard towards the end//the woman was speaking really fast and i wrote it all out in english letters like how i write on the internet cuz it takes me so long to put all the dots and that and my 'n's become 'b's so instead of saying bokon i'm like nakon if that makes any sense

anyways fekr nakonam ziad be dard bekhore..the only place that accepted it was imperial (which was my first choice)..the others didn't but apparently u can appeal...

i was born and bred here so i had to go to school but if u've lived in iran it will be piss 4 u

u can order the past papers

thanx but its a bit late now.. its been nearly 10days since i did the exam :biggrin:
