That's exactly what they ask for! I wouldn't be worrying about that

I was going to apply to Manchester for Chinese or Japanese as a backup but my personal statement is so orientated towards Korean I doubt they'd even consider me. I'm not sure if I should apply to both Korean Studies and Korean and Japanese at the moment >.<

Ahh yeah i understand.. my personal statement is mostly related to Japan, but i'm trying to squeeze some Korea in there so i hope i'll be considered for Korean with Japanese.
You could perhaps apply to both?^^

I'm thinking about it ^.^
If it's about Japan why don't you apply to Japanese Studies? Korean with Japanese is mainly Korean and the Japanese will probably get you to about 1st year Japanese Student. Surely you'd prefer Japan for a year? :s-smilie:

Which do you prefer? You get to go abroad for a year, where would you rather go and which language would you be most excited to learn? Thinking about those might help you

Hi there! sorry I am a little late to the party! I've been looking at this thread for ages, so I might as well comment. I have also applied for Sheffield, SOAS and Lancashire, and I just got my details for UCAS track today, so the next few months are going to be spent anxiously waiting for offers.

Have you applied to just pure Korean or dual honours? Good luck with your applications. 화이팅!

Hi! I'm sending off my UCAS hopefully very soon (within the next week or two), keep me informed how yours goes! We'll be anxiously waiting together ^.^

For Sheffield I'm debating whether to apply to just Korean Studies or Korean Studies with Japanese! I definitely want to do Korean the most but also learning Japanese sounds awesome  For SOAS and UCLan I'm applying to just Korean. What about you? Also how did your AS's go?

It's awesome to find someone in the exact same boat as me! I'd put something in Korean but I'm at college and they don't have a Korean keyboard installed ;-;

I'm also excited that you're in the same boat as me!!! So far I've only been able to find Japanese studies applicants, so this is exciting!

If you're debating between whether to do Korean or Korean with Japanese, why don't you apply to both? (I think you can apply for both.) Even if you just take pure Korean though, you do get an elective module from what I've heard, so you would be able to take at least one Japanese class, but of course that isn't going to be as detailed as taking it for dual honours.

I'm applying for just Korean because that's where my heart is, so I'd like to focus all my time on that. I got an A in my AS, but I'm a triple BTEC student (D*D*D*), so I'm a little worried Sheffield and SOAS might not see me as an academic candidate in comparison to A level students. I hope I've more than made up for this with my grades and my ambition though!

How about you?

Yeah there are so many Japanese student applicants! My heart is definitely for Korean but I am considering Japanese because of the extra skill so extra employability. Korean will always be first in my heart ❤️

I'm sure they'll consider you just as highly don't worry! My AS's didn't go as well as I hoped so I got ABB but my B's are quite low so I'm retaking one module. It makes me feel nervous when people have gotten A*AA or something because I feel like they'll get the places rather than me. I'm just so nervous :frown:

I didn't know you could do Japanese without dual honours so I might do that!

Would you rather go to Sheffield or SOAS?

It's obviously up to you, but if you want to do both Korean and Japanese, then go for the dual honours

Also don't be disheartened at all by your AS results, ABB is wonderful! The entry requirements (for Sheffield) are ABB, and even then you have a whole year to improve. Also, at the open day I went to in June, the admissions tutor (who was a very lovely person) said that it is not set in stone and that they may consider lower offers when it comes to clearing based on the determination and interest of the applicant in the subject. You sound like you have tons of determination and interest, so I'm sure that you could get in.

I'm nervous too, so we're in this together! Honestly, my personal choice is Sheffield. It's such a lovely city, and the university seems incredibly supportive and welcoming. UCLAN is my second choice because it is close to home, and SOAS would be my final choice because although I'm sure their teaching is wonderful, I'd need a miracle to afford life in London.

What's your first choice? Anyway, just hang in there and try not to worry too much. I'm sure you're gonna do great.

Yeah I went to the open day in June too! I was in the afternoon session, we might have been in the same one

My first choice is Sheffield too, I fell in love with the university when I went there! I haven't visited Lancashire yet, what's it like? I visited SOAS and it was okay, although it's really far from home and very expensive so :frown: Also the grades are higher than Sheffield's, so I prefer Sheffield

Oh cool, I was also in the afternoon session! The similarities keep adding up
I haven't actually visited UCLan either, however I live near Preston so I'm often in the city. To be honest, Preston is quite small and crowded, and although it's sweet it doesn't give me the same home vibe that Sheffield does, even if Sheffield is further away.

UCLan will definitely be my insurance though, as it is close to home, and from what I've heard their Asia Pacific degree is quite good. However, my heart is so set on Sheffield, because honestly, their course and teaching and city is just so much better. I just got my email today from Sheffield and UCLan saying that they've forwarded my application for consideration, so the waiting game is truly on! My heart is gonna jump out of my body at this rate... :0

Let me know if you want to know anything/need any help with applying.

I completely agree! I'm from near Sheffield and love it here! I want to go to university here because I want to live in a city so I don't think I'd like Preston :frown: I also want to be able to visit my boyfriend in Manchester and it's not expensive from Sheffield

Good luck! I'm sending mine off on Thursday hopefully :3
Hi

여러분 안녕하세요.
만나서반갑습니다.

지금 셰필드에 살고 셰필드에서 한국학을 공부했어요.

Just thought that you would want to hear about sheffield Korean studies from experience.
I did korean studies at Sheffield in 2013 up until now. I can honestly say that the teaching staff are nice but korean studies is more like high school especially the department so it's a heads up on what to expect. I would suggest not picking yonsei univeristy on the year abroad as they are very rasict to their students (one refused to teach me because I was a sheffield student) Seas (department name) don't tell you how bad their reputation is which korean universities.
All in all the course and langugae is really good to learn and experience so I would recommend it but Its just advise that apot can go wrong in the years in sheffield with SEAS. Taking Korean with Japanese is a dual honors that requires alot of work including homework and learning two langugae at once is alot to take in.

Taking korean studies, you can take Japanese for non specialists as a module for 20 credits and is alot easier to handle.
The year abroad is in the 2nd year here where as Lancashire offer the year abroad in 3rd year. It is a struggle to complete it in the second year unless you study alot. Korean universities pass level is high and sheffield require you to pass 3 levels or 4 before you can return to 3rd year. Also even though sheffield say they prefer you know no korean (like ucas say and say no one will know korean who is in the class) and if like me, you arrive knowing nothing then you will be already far behind as almost everyone I encountered in my studies knew a basic conversation ... I didnt even know the alphabet.

Other than that sheffield is a really good city to live in and I hope this wasn't too bad or put you off. I just wanted to give a little information they don't tell you on open days

Thank you  I'm definitely decided to only apply to Korean Studies now.
Can you explain how it's like high school and how Yonsei is racist and the bad reputation please? My uncle is from Korea and said Yonsei is great (his Dad went there) so I've never heard this bad side to it :/ He was really excited for me to go.
Also how many months is the year abroad as the korean school year is different?

They put me in touch with a 3rd year Korean and Japanese student at Sheffield and she told me to learn the alphabet, as did the staff when I went and I already know basic grammar/conversation so I'm thankful now. Also how was the support from Sheffield in the year abroad?

Yeah thats the thing! I think i'd prefer to spend my year abroad in Japan. I was leaning towards Korean for the most of last year but now i've completely switched >.<
