I'll just say thank you to the people at King's - I visited Cambridge today and thought the college and people seemed lovely (even though I made an appearance in the middle of the exam period). Met a nice philosopher who showed me the dining hall and even gave me advice on applying to Warwick. Cambridge really is an incredible place.

That would have been my friend Adam (I'm another philosopher at King's)
Glad King's made a good impression...are you considering applying there now?

Yes, I think his name was Adam. I might apply to King's (or possibly Clare) for English. Does the novelty of the chapel ever wear off? I'm still at the Japanese tourist "Look at that!" stage - very nice place.

Cool, King's and Clare are both nice choices.

Is King's very competitive for Economics?

Is King's really considered one of the most academically successful colleges?

Reply 65

Don't know, but I think it ranks among the top5 for the final year results only.

Reply 66

How often are there formals at King's? Like nice dinners where people eat and drink together?

Once a week...but the quality of food is rated quite highly and is quite expensive. Other colleges have them around three times a week.

Not that I know of...results fluctuate every year and just depend on where the best students are that particular year rather than anything to do with the college itself.

Hmm, I get the impression that King's has much less social activities than the other colleges. Like only one formal/week, ents (?) and other things. Is that accurate or am I misguided?

It has, as far as I can tell, the same number of social activities (ents) but fewer formals. We're a sociable college though, so even when there isn't some form of entertainment going on you're bound to find some people who are up for going out elsewhere.

Thanks!
What are these social activities (ents) anyway? Heard a lot of them, but have no clue.

-Live music in the bar (ska bands, samba bands, jazz bands, rock bands, open mic nights- talent shows, basically- DJs)
-We have a cellar bar (basically a dark basement where DJs play once or twice a week...indie nights, cheese nights, a lot of DNB and house)

Live music in the bar and cellar happens on average two to three times a week.

At the end of Michaelmas and Lent term we have 'Mingles' in which most of the big rooms in college (bar, cellar bar, conference rooms) have different kinds of music playing which changes throughout the night. So you might have indie in the bar, dance music in the cellar, and then house in the conference rooms. I love the Mingles because of the music- if you hate a particular type of music you just go into a different room. One of our porters impersonates Elvis and sometimes we have live drumming and bands. Generally though, the main focus is on having a variety of DJs. King's Mingle is generally seen to be one of the best ents in Cambridge. In place of the Mingle at the end of Easter term, there is King's Affair, which is basically the Mingle on a bigger scale (I've not been to one yet as I'm only in the first year). King's Affair is King's (cheaper) alternative to posh May Balls, though obviously many people choose to go to May Balls as well as the affair.

Cool, that sounds fun, so there's a lot of stuff going on, right?
Does the "live music" thing involve dancing?

What happens about accomodation at King's? Apparently we only get information in August, which seems a bit late.

Ok, so the best rooms are in Keynes?

In my opinion, they are the best in first year. Best location (in college, right above the bar) and en-suite. Second and third year accomodation is a lot better- Bodley's court by the river (rooms with a bedroom and a living room to yourself) and New Garden with balconies and en-suite.

Any tips for how to make sure I'll get a room in Keynes?
I'm from EU (outside UK), so I'll probably get my package with all the forms later than my peers.

If the forms are the same as mine last year, tick the box which says you have no preference in terms of price (those who say they want cheaper rooms will be put in them) and that you want short-contract not long-contract. Most people get Keynes, so you shouldn't have too much trouble. I wrote on my form I wanted it...not sure if it made a difference, but worth a try I guess. Bear in mind though that if you are outside UK you might want to leave your stuff in your room over the vacation, in which case a long-term contract (in Market or TCR) would be better. You can leave stuff in trunk rooms in Keynes though, so I guess that would work as well.
