Placement in Orthopaedics - First year student nurse

Hello,

My third placement starts on Monday at a large hospital specialised in Orthopaedic care. I have been sent leaflets that are handed out to patients/carers to help them understand their condition and how to deal with it, searched around and watched videos from the hospital on YouTube.

I just don't feel like I'm ready though and it's such a great opportunity. I don't know how much the mentors and nurses will expect me to know.

I'm just hoping I don't feel too overwhelmed on the first day, I guess!

Any suggestions or helpful sources about Orthopaedic care?

Hey,

Try not to worry too much, they won't expect you to know that much. You're still fairly early on in your training so it will be more about the basics of care and nursing, rather than any specific speciality knowledge.

On your first or second shift, have a chat with your mentor about the common things they see and if they have any recommended sources for you to look at.

I hope it goes well!

Your reply actually made me feel a whole lot better - I was thinking about it totally wrong! Got bogged down about not knowing the names of conditions/symptoms etc. When I'll probably learn first of all what care does this patient need? Bed baths, change of positions, wound care, changing dressings, moving and handling, vital observations, how care plans are done, drawing medicines and so on. I guess the fact it's a specialised hospital put me into panic mode!

Haha, thanks!
