Talking your way into uni......

Say i slip a grade below my conditional offer, how likely is that i can talk my way in using general studies/AS subject/key skills and anything i can think of.....including begging!?? Did anyone slip a grade or two and have a similar experience? xxx

What particular course and uni do you have in mind???

Many universities may be generous and admit you. I know of Blissy getting AAC and Cambridge still accepted her despite the offer being AAB. But then her C in French was one UMS point off a B.

I was let into my first choice (UEA) despite missing my offer grades, however I think I talked myself into here during my interview, as on results day I phoned up thinking I would have been rejected and wanted to see if there was any way I could get myself in, and they told me that I'd already been accepted, and my registration pack was on the way. I know its possible to talk to tutors on results day - I know a couple of my year had to because of maths results, and eventually got let in.

Good thread.. this is something I'm worried about too.. and I hate the fact that it rests on your persuading abilities. Last year my friend managed to get into Manchester with BBC where he had to get ABB while I know of other people who missed their grades by a few marks and weren't let in.

Also.. if you don't get the grades and you don't get an offer to study at your Uni, instead of going through clearing can you just phone up Uni's and try to blag your way in that way?

People try this when they get better than expected grades and want to get onto a course that isn't in clearing (my tutor tells me that this has happened at IC for Elec Eng and Warwick for Comp Sci in the past). I don't see why you couldn't try it as long as you meet the grade requirements.

Ooo.. cool- and how about getting onto a subject that you hadn't applied for originally?

I did something slightly similar. Last year i got BEE and i needed CCC i had extenuating circumstances which the uni's knew about. On results day i knew i wasn't going to get in but i had applied for deferred entry originally. I phoned the admissions tutors and asked if they would consider reofffering me a place as long as i resat my a levels. One said maybe but apply anyway, and the other said yes. That was my motivation to move somewhere else and start afresh. I know have my original 2 offers and i pray to high heaven i get the grades this time!

i know plenty of people who didnt meet their grade requirements... but they all managed to get into their first choices just by ringing up on results day. someone who needed ABB got BBC, that kind of thing, got in no problem. i think they put secret little notes on your ucas form saying what grades they REALLY need from you if they were impressed with your personal statement. make sure you have the relevent phone numbers, names and a full battery in your mobile when you go to pick up your results... as i can guarantee every phone in the school biulding will already have someone on it!!!
theres loads of options: if they wont take you on the course, they might let you on a joint degree (and you can switch sneakily mid november), or one without a year out or year abroad which your planned course had.
Yeah, I know that in Southampton their policy is to reconsider your application even if you drop as much as 2 grades (this is the business school, accounting dept btw), so you'd stand a pretty good chance of getting in. On the other hand if you tried the same with LSE then you wouldn't have much of a chance.

Nottingham Business School told us if we don't get at least ABB.. we're not in - not even with AAC. They want no grade lower than a B, and at least one A! With it being the most popular department at the most popular university, if you don't get the grades - you can wave goodbye!

Hmm, I'm not so sure - If you can, I would add virginity to the above list if you definitely want in.

Actually, not true....well, at least internationally ( I guess LSE needs the money), cos 6 of the students at my school last year got conditional offers from LSE, and mind you, they were very competitive courses (economics, international relations, etc.) and ALL 6 of them missed their offers. Our university counselor just rang up the LSE ppl and in the end, LSE took all 6 of them in! And I think they missed by quite a bit too...

One of my friends wanted to do the same course as me - Law at Cardiff. The prospectus had ABB but after applying they then put it up to AAB because it was so oversubscribed. My friend got BBBB I think, and they didn't let him in. They did however point out that there were a few spare places in Computing he could go for, so he's now here studying that and seems happy enough!

It's more of a case that LSE wants the money, not needs . Intl students pay around 10x home student fees, so if LSE can take more intl students then they will, even at the expense of home students.

It appears that Aston have an entry grade average of about 22 points which suggests that you would have a fair shot at getting in with ABC (24) or even ABD (22). This is based on the average for Business Studies though so I'm not 100% sure it would apply in this case.
