MSc Global Politics

Hi, I am new to this forum and am really, really, glad that I found this wealth of information--an excellent forum with great contrbiuting members !! Keep up the great work!

I have been accepted into LSE's MSc. Global Politics program and am very anxious to commence in October 2004.

I am a Canadian and will be relocating in London--something wich I am very excited about, because I have only heard great things about London.

So my question is: who else has been accepted to that program? MSc Global politics or even MSc International Relations (because I believe both are very much inter-disciplinary and allow courses to be taken from a variety of difft departments)? and where are you coming from?

PS. It sucks that the IT staff at LSE were unable to get the 'In Touch' Pilot scheme to be up and running, it would have been a great way to meet ppl, especially for the intl students. But ahh well, guess it forces me to join more student societies and clubs.

Any comments, feedback/thgouhts appreciated.

Thanks.

i doubt that there will be a great number of people studying msc in LSE from this forum, as most of us are undergrads or soon-to-be undergrads  Therefore, the chance of someopne doing a msc and from lse and doing Global Politics is pretty slim

lol, that's the first thing you'll learn about LSE- how inept the IT service people are. I've lost access to my email account at least 5 times this year.....

Hello. I too am beginning my Msc at LSE this fall (or autumn... as I believe it's referred to in the UK). My course is the Msc in Culture and Society- a new course for 2003-4 that is jointly offered by the Sociology and Media departments. I'm also coming from North America: I live in the northern suburbs of Chicago.
Have you decided where you'll live? I'll actually be living with my boyfriend, who's from London when I get there- so we have to find a flat somewhere once I arrive. I've checked out the University of London Accommodation Office's website and it looks promising. They have house share and flat listings available. You can request the password, and they will email it to you to gain access to the site.
I think I'd like to live in N1 or E1- somewhere in Shoreditch, Hoxton (near Old Street Station) or Islington. One of my friends from Australia has a great house in Islington she shares with some other Aussies and it's a good location, with large rooms and nicely decorated. Not sure though how long it will take to get to Houghton St.
Did you apply for the Graduate Support Scheme? (I rec. a graduate merit award to qualify.) I filled out the form online and it rejected me automatically... I don't know what happened. If anyone's applied for it, I'd be interested to find out what their results were.
Also, have you started applying for your Visa? I've sort of been waiting to fully sort out my funding before beginning the Visa application, but really I should start that ASAP.
See you in London soon!

Hi!

I also got an offer for the MSc in Global Politics. I still don't know whether to accept it or not. Do you think it is a good degree? What sort of jobs do you intend to do afterwards?

I also got a problem with the Graduate Support Scheme. I got rejected straight after submitting my application... Any info about that?

I will be entering for Global Politics as well. The only thing we have in common is that one course (from empire to globalization). Other than that, we grab and select courses from other disciplines.

I dont know what Im going to take--im thinking for the regionally focused course, India. As for the others, am thinking of EH courses.

I plan on working back here in the USA, and like much of you out there who are pursuing this major OR Inter. Relations, am uncertain and concerned over what hte future holds.

If you contact LSE's career services office, it's virtually all the same BS as you hear from other undergrads/grads here in the states. Ask what you can do with the degree, they counter with, "what do you want to do." then you have to say something like, govt., or journalism, or academics, etc.

The truth seems to be that there is no direct linkage between this degree and employment. Hello--career changes, anyone?

i, like many of my peers, have reservations. i mean, would you go to harvard and get an MA in art, or architecture, or journalism, for that matter? I dont know. name is not everything. its profession specific. go get an MD and see if anyone cares where its from. a jd, of course, is another matter--it REALLY matters where it's from. same iwth investment banking.

in short, i chose this cause its the only thing im really good at and have a strong interest in. do i know where ill end up? nope. but im going to keep digging til i hit something.

at the least, its 30k down the drain, 1 year sacrifice, interesting people, and living in a world class city. at the best, some employer will figure out that we have a brain and will train us in their field.

same thoughts here... also from the states... also doing an "unusal" degree... econ history... know i'm interested in the development and integration of the world economy, development of econ systems, institutions, economic change, etc... Would really like to do consulting (strategic) afterwards... but not sure how it will play out w/ the course i chose.
