Oh, and the reason they don't offer law is that when Dundee University formed (as a breakaway institution from St.Andrews), it took the law faculty with it.

And, I see that it was actually stated in previous posts that St.A doesn't do medicine. False.

It only does pre-clinical - a Bachelor's degree (with or without Honours) in Medical Science, kind of like the first med degree at Oxbridge or London. Clinical must be done elsewhere, usually in Manchester. To clarify. So it doesn't do all medicine - but let's face it, there would be nothing to see in St Andrews University Hospital if it existed except golfer's knee, so people trained clinically there wouldn't be too useful. In fact, the best clinical in Scotland is at Glasgow purely for that reason - big city, you get to see a lot, and they have a lot of good research. (Apparently Glasgow is now top for medicine in Britain, too - the Times).

No way. Really? It's been Edinburgh since... when Edinburgh was founded I thought.

St Andrews has a beach and its really nice on a nice sunny day (like today-yay!). Dundee and Edinburgh are close at hand though, if it gets too boring.

I really liked St Andrews, its my insurance offer. Its very well thought of internationally as well. Probably would get a bit boring occasionally, but then again, I reckon all places are liek that.

But there's a much better quality of Fife accents at Edinburgh.

Are there a lot of undegraduate students from St Andrews studying at Oxbridge?

What is your firm offer? What will you be studying? St Andrews is good for jazz by the way.

They are all anglicised. 50% of the student community is from England. I called once St Andrews and 2 out of 3 secreteries were speaking with no scottish accent at all. To be honest I could hardly understand the third one:smile: She must be a proud Scot.

As I understand it St Andrews has a great deal more English and American students than the other unis. The best Uni for Fife accents would obviously be Dundee but then you'd have to go to Dundee. The second best I'm told is Edinburgh... unless I've been misinformed.

Do you mean doing postgraduate studies or people who actually come from St Andrews. There aren't a lot of natives - it's a small(ish) town across the Forth from Edinburgh. You can see it from the Castle quite easily.

Are you saying you have seen St Andrews from Edinburgh castle?

Really. The two are actually very different - Glasgow is far more focused on the whole Problem-Based Learning thing. As you can tell, I know a stupid amount about this - my dad is a Reader in Nephrology at Glasgow and on the admissions committee. Edinburgh in reality is probably better though

WTH is nephrology? Sounds hideously complicated :s-smilie:

Nephrologists deal with the Kidneys IIRC. I only remember because I once got them mixed up with Urologists and was... politely corrected.

IMHO Glasgow is a better university, Edinburgh is a prettier city. In the words of South Park though "I base this on nothing at all".

They do indeed.

They are different. I would say Edinburgh is better for arts and Glasgow for sciences. Worst point about Glasgow is that most of the students were born in Glasgow and live at home (at least for first year).

And Glasgow is pretty! Especially the west end, where the city is... okay, okay, I'm biased, sitting here in, well, the west end. Edinburgh is older.

To me Glasgow is synonymous (I bet I spelt that wrong. Ah well, after my higher I never have to speak English again ) with neds and bars.
Wheras Edinburgh is the Fringe and shopping.
Also, most of the people going to uni from my school go to Glasgow, so it can't be that good

St Andrews on the other hand: learning, learning, learning with a bit of jazz and a lot of pints (Strongbow they prefer)

and golf! You can't forget the golf
Reply 37
do you play golf at Oxbridge? Or are you not posh enough for it. By the way what does it cost to play golf at the University of St Andrews?
cheers,
a rah undergraduate

Yeah, as someone said earlier a 'communter uni'.

The west end is great, but take a look at the city centre ( the proper centre; glasgow cross, buchanan street, argyll street, St George's ) it doesn't really compare with the centre of Edinburgh, now does it? At the same time I doubt I would like to LIVE in Edinburgh other than for uni because the Edinburgh sub-urbs are - if possible - even worse than others. I'm deeply fond of Edinburgh's city centre though.

Yes, you're right. *g* Can't get that West vs East of Scotland mentality out of my head.

Mine all go to Strath, Glasgow, Dundee. A few to Edinburgh. Then a very few elsewhere. So yeah, I've always thought they can't be that good for that reason

I love the Fringe. Okay, will shut up now and admit Edinburgh is lovely
