LMH + college reputation/atmosphere

I'm new, and I submitted an open app; was assigned Lady Margaret Hall. Haven't visisted Oxford, so I truly have no idea how it is, and am still a tad confused on the whole college system (virtually nonexistant here), does LMH have a good rep? though I've also heard it really is the course you've applied for rather than the college that is most important. Can anyone help? Thanks, and I'm still nervously waiting a decision *crosses fingers*

Oh, and any tidbits about LMH in general is quite appreciated thanks .

I've heard it's ok. Relatively far away from the other colleges (north east)

I applied to St Catz but had to do a third interview at LMH. The atmosphere at St Catz was much more relaxed, people were very friendly and everybody was talking to each other. The JCR at LMH was tiny compared to the one at St Catz and while I was there nobody said a word, even though there were lots of people... The buildings are lovely though. It's right next to the park and close to the river.
Accomodation is quite expensive and you have to pay for food even if you cook for yourself.

Free Bird: I haven't been to LMH myself, but they all say that you're going to love the college you go to pretty much no matter what and end up feeling very attached to it. So I don't think you've got anything to worry about.

Don't judge LMH by what it was like in the JCR, as the atmosphere of people at interview is totally different from that at term time... LMH is really nice, a really informal laid back place, and most people seem to think it has a really nice atmosphere (when i was at interviews, a girl taking hers at St Annes came over and didn't want to leave!)

Hello, I got an offer from LMH for Biological Sciences (my first choice, I liked the grounds and the walk to the Science dept) - I'm thrilled, of course!

I have a quick question for anyone already there - does LMH have a gym and what is it like? I didn't go to an open day there as I attended one at another college (which I didn't take to, so I changed my college choice before applying.)

Also, the link to the Alternative Prospectus given in the topic doesn't seem to work or the site is down - is it the right link?

Many thanks

the gym is adequate - most colleges don't have one. there's weights, a treadmill, a walker thingy, and rowing machines. meh, the whole of LMH is due a facelift tho (work mainly being done in non-term times) think we're gettin a new one. its got tennis courts, b-ball hoops and a squash court. what link you been given?

hmm, the LMH JCR has that effect at interviews - was the same when i was being interviewed. don't let it fool you tho, LMH is by far the most relaxed and friendly college at Oxford.

and regards food, its not as black and white as you say. basically you have a card and put money on it. there are 3 tariffs. a load money, a middle amount, and a low amount. the low amount is basically admin rubbish just for use of the kitchens in college and their maintenance, and thats what you pay if you cook yourself.

aye. its far enough out to be quiet, away from the rabble of middle-oxford. but its not miles away, like hilda's, hughes or wolfson. plus if you do sciences, the trip across the parks is often shorter than the "centre of everything colleges" and nobody cares about the distance at stupid am in a state of post sobriety - more time and distance to wreak havoc  and there's very few bloody tourists - even the msot dedicated japanese groups rarely get here.

I've got friends studying at LMH atm, and they love it there. They're also lovely people and I'm sure they'd make any new people feel at home  Apparently, the College has a pretty garden too

hmm, what years they in? aye the garden is cool.. during summer term when most folks are (supposed to be) revising there's a footy game on every night on the field, and if its a sunny day, everyone is out on the lawns just chillaxin.
