I don't know anything about the OCR exam, but if it's like the AQA one, you'll be allowed to take the text in with you, as long as it's got no notes etc on it, or you'll be given a clean copy. But I'm pretty sure they won't make you go through the exam without even the text.

I'm studying 'Death of a Salesman' by Arthur Miller and 'The Old Man and the Sea' by Ernest Hemingway, for OCR english/literature and was wondering if copies of the play/novel are allowed to be taken in to the exam and if so, may they be annotated with notes and stuff. or is that not allowed? Thanks

From the OCR Specification for English Literature:

For examinations in June 2005 and subsequent sessions, while any appropriate editions may be used for classroom purposes, candidates may take into the examination only specified editions of the prescribed texts. Candidates may not annotate in any way texts to be used in the examination.

A-Level Lit does allow most books to be annotated, it's GCSE texts that aren't. If you are unsure check with the exam board, but if your teacher(s) have said it's OK then it's OK.

are you doing AQA. Because i definately know in AQA AS eng lit , you cant even take the the death of a salesman book into the exam so you have to remember the quotes and things which puts us all in a difficult position.

OCR English/English Lit which I sat last year including Death of a Salesman were ALL open-book exams. I think it is highly unlikely you would ever be set a closed-book exam at GCSE level.
Remember that OCR disallows any form of notes/inserts/annotations at GCSE, but you may have light annotations for some AS modules.
