At Loughborough:

All the halls have Rag Reps who do various money raising things throughout the year, making sure that pretty much everyone gets involved!

There's the RAG bonfire, every End of Term Party is for RAG (you pay £5 for ticket), when you enter the Union there's always some people with buckets collecting! There are also various RAG events (beer festival, outdoor concert for example!) and then there is the infamous RAG Week where everything and anything is for charity!!

Actually, here is the website, lol - and last year they raised a total of £626,147.56!!

Erm...what does RAG stand for? If I had to guess I would say 'raise a glass'? But I have no idea!

We had some sort of themed night in the union, the jazz band I'm in played too. No idea how much they raised though.

Nottingham has the biggest RAG organisation, called Karnival (or Karni).

This year we raised £660,000+

About half of that total was raised through rag raiding, which is when coachloads of people go to about ten or twelve cities raising money in fancy dress every Saturday in winter term. We get a lot of donations, and most of the major club nights are run by Karni, so they get profit from them. Also, reps in halls run their own events (so they can try to win the title for most money raised), and there are some huge events as well.

Is that Nottingham University or what?

Yep, thats what her sig says.

Is Nottingham Karni the same thing as Nottingham Students Union?

Reply 9

Karni is not the same thing at the SU. The SU is more to do with student welfare and activities in general, whereas Karni is all about raising money for charity. I'm sure they work closely on many things but they're not actually the same organisation. Karni might come under the umbrella of the SU as a whole, I'm not really sure.

The RAG at Exeter are always doing things. They do loads of raids, for one. And then there's the Safer Sex Ball; everyone goes in skimpy outfits and the tickets sell out incredibly quickly. This term just gone RAG hitched to Dublin, and they're hitching to Amsterdam next term.

Actually...it's not properly known.

It isn't known where the name Rag originates, but it is thought to be from the Victorian era when students took time out of their studies to collect rags to clothe the poor. In modern times "Rag" has come to stand for "Raise and Give" or "Raising and Giving", although it seems likely that this is a backronym. One story has it that the backronym was coined to convince a manager in a large charity of the value of working with student fundraisers. The first Rag in South Africa was started at the University of Stellenbosch by the male residence Helderberg.

'rag week' used to be a crude term to describe a woman ovulating. i was suprised to see 'rag week' as something half my university participated at the same time...

Karni is affiliated to the Nottingham Students Union, but they don't necessarily see eye to eye on quite a few things!

The Karni at Notts is amazing, its been so much fun as a fresher this year. No other uni's do anything like it ive asked all my friends , Karni is huge here and like RBF said Notts uni raised over 660,000 which I think is pretty damn impressive. Met some students from edinburugh on one rag raid there were about 4 of them on the whole thing. Didnt Sherwood Hall get 80 freshers on one rag this year?

We have a Rag Blind Date at Cambridge, carefully timed to fall in the week before Valentine's Day, of course!

At Oxford there's rag week once a term. During the October rag week the Oxford stunt factory do a sponsored bungee jump. There's always £5 haircuts and manicures and speed-dating @ Mertons. Other than that it varies...

Rag are always doing stuff at Leeds.

Usually involves fancy dress and Otley Runs.

Sherwood managed to get more than 100 freshers on one of their Rag Raids I believe... that is how one hall earns more than £51,000 on rag raids alone! It's almost a sixth of the total the uni made from rag raids... insane!
