McGill or UBC??

I've got offer from both McGill and UBC in Canada, but i'm hesitating for my final chioce.

UBC allows transfer credit from A-Levels and schoolarship, while McGill offers neither. it's said that McGill has a higher reputation than UBC, yet it's rumored that McGill has set bck these days, and the recent ranking shows that UBC's always in front of McGill. Also, UBC seems have better facilities than McGill...

i really dont know how to choose now......coz apart from academics, both campuses are said to be really cool.

can any1 give me some advice plz...thx

Have you visited either of them? I know it's difficult becuase of time and money restraints but that might help you to decide. I don't know too much about either, McGill is in the French part of Canada isn't it? I don't know if that is a factor for you or not. I think they both have good reps. Erm...that's about it. Sorry I can't help you more. Where do you think you will be happiest? Think about location, size, facilities, etc.

McGill is in Montreal, so yeah, it's in the French part of Canada.

It sounds like you want to go to UBC and are trying to convince yourself.

If you want to go there then that is reason enough to pick them - you don't need to justify your decision....

am i?? well, i was thinkng of going to UBC, then my fri who's in UBC right now said that the uni's admitting too many 1st years, so that lecture rooms are cramped....and lots of ppl told me that ranking is not sth that i should rely on, as it takes so many things into account. i know that the environment and weather in Vancouver's much better than Montreal... on the other hand, i really would like to improve my French....

I wouldn't use the crampedness of the lecure rooms as a determining factor! I've never been to either place so I can't really compare them, but my mate is half canadian and she goes to BC every summer and loves it!

This overcrowding is a problem that's endemic in UK unis as well so it is not unique by any means to UBC, but rather an indication of the popularity, world wide, of Higher Education.

My view here is completely biased and under researched... so take it with a grain of salt...

I don't know anything about UBC.... However I've known 2 very smart and interesting people who did their undergrads at McGill. It has a distinguished reputation in the US and is looked upon as the best University in Canada. Actually it's becoming popular with American students who want a good education at a cheap price- the tuition in Canada is much lower than other prestigious colleges in the U.S. But maybe having a lot of American students is a deterrent. I do believe however, that there will not only be American students... my other friend who went there grew up in Senegal- so I think it should have a very international and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

In regards to the question about McGill being French, it is actually the English-speaking University in Montreal.

Good luck and I recommend McGill...

Don't worry about English/French in Montreal. Learn some French if you don't know any already. But all the teaching at McGill is in English and most of the students are from English-speaking homes. Also Montreal is by no means 100 percent French-speaking. It's more like 2/3rds Quebecois/Francophone versus 1/3 English/Anglophone. It's a very cosmopolitan city, and a very beautiful city with some striking physical characteristics. You need French to take up a job there though.

Montreal is a lot of fun, and generally Canada has plenty of space, clean air and water, and a more laid-back air than the USA. McGill might have slid in recent years. One sad feature of Montreal when I knew it five years or so ago is that the economy there has been soft for quite a while and I think this has affected McGill too. I do know that Canadian friends rate Toronto higher and perhaps UBC too, but in the USA McGill continues to enjoy a prestigious reputation in upper-class circles.
