Hi,

I came to Jesus College for a tour round and stuff about a month or so back, and as part of the afterwork, we have to write a magazine article about it.

If anyone has any ideas for originiality, or some interesting facts or stories about Jesus, I'd appreciate them!

I mean things like the trashings which happen after exams, and stuff like that.

Cheersio!

This story originates from the late 16th century.

Long, long ago, five rather boisterous male undergrads at Jesus were worried about their exam grades (they were final year students), for they had spent their days drinking fine wine and had largely neglected their Theology studies.

And so it came to the final Hilary term of their course and the five 'scholars' were by now very anxious about failing their degree courses. And so it was that they decided to collect together in a single room of the college, to drink more fine wine and, more importantly, hatch the cunning plan which would allow them to leave university with decent degrees and lead prosperous lives as clergymen.

For seven consecutive days, the five students met in a medium-sized room in the college. In the 16th century (and prior to this), meeting other students, outside of formal college functions, was strictly forbidden! By the eighth day, the five scholars had concocted a plan to save their studies and in the process had managed to drink the whole college wine cellar dry!

Legend has it that the college Dean stormed the room just as its incumbents were streaming out - allegedly they were on their way to his office to change their grades! The Dean of Jesus clipped each one around the ear before sending them all to Coventry, and called them 'The Jesus College Renegades'.

After the incident, The Jesus College Renegades were never seen again - rumour has it that they escaped from Coventry and fled to Poitiers. The Dean decided to break with Oxford tradition after the incident, and allowed all undergraduate scholars to enter the room which the 'Renegades had previously been holed-up in. This room was named after them (The Jesus College Renegade room) but was later shortened to JCR.

In the modern era, the abbreviation JCR has been modified to mean Junior Common Room and has been gradually adopted by all the colleges in Oxford. Were it not for the Jesus College Renegades though, Oxford students would still be prohibited from congregating together socially.
