I'm having a hard time deciding which hall I will choose for my first choice because of this. I've noticed most people prefer self-catered halls, why is that?

Also, I'm aware that in catered halls we get around 50% discount on the food, but is it expensive?

Because you get to cook your own food and choose what you eat.

The food wasn't expensive when I was there, £3-4 per meal, but of course if you cook for yourself you can make food in bulk much cheaper. But catered is more convenient in some ways, so it's whether you're prepared to pay more to not have to cook.
