Hello there!

I am quite confused about macrocytic anemia vs megaloblastic anaemia. My understanding is that megaloblastic anemia is essentially macrocytic anemia with bone marrow involvement.

The question is does alocholism cause macrocytic anemia or megaloblastic anemia?

I've looked at different sources but I cant come to a difinitive answer. Some sources say that alcohol causes macrocytic anemia some say megaloblastic due to deficiency to B12 and folate?

Thank you so much!

I've always thought it was a nonmegaloblastic macrocytic anaemia with alcohol and a megaloblastic macrocytic anaemia with B12/folate deficiency...

Or?

I've been told that chronic alcoholism causes you to excrete a lot of water soluble vitamins along with the alcohol, so that would include B12.
