Is a mechatronics degree respected and what are the employment prospects like in general when the course is taken at a good university?

Its respected but not well recognised as its a relatively new degree. I'd put petroleum engineering in the same bracket as its just a spin off chemical engineering. In the same way mechatronics is a spin off electronic engineering. My advice would be only do it if you're 100% sure you want to go into a robotics related career. Electronic engineering opens more doors as you can go into robotics as well as countless other careers.
