Queen Mary Society and Clubs...how mixed are they?

Hey Ladies and Gents,

So I've firmed QMUL's unconditional offer for law and was researching a bit about uni life and all, and all of a sudden it struck me that the campuses are all seperated subject wise. So, as I'll be doing Law, it appears that I'll be confined to the Mile End campus and will only meet people from the humanities and social sciences course which is a bit limited. I would like to meet people from other backgrounds than those matching mine such as sciences and all, since I did study science and really enjoyed it for my alevels so the interest is still obviously there and I was wondering how likely it is that I'll get to meet scientists and medics and engineers due to the campus locations and the fact that they all have different societies? For example, I want to join the ISOC but then I noticed that Barts has a different ISOC etc...any societies that are not campus seperated that I could join?

Technically speaking there is another few campuses but they are postgraduate stuff.
There are two campuses which are basically for undergraduates........the far majority of them are in fact based at Mile End.
The others are based at the Whitechapel campus who are essentially the Dentists and Medics, however I believe some of the bio/chem classes are now shared over at Barts.

Mile end is shared by the majority, the science people, engineers, maths, other social sciences, etc
I don't know where you got the idea that you'll be only with social science people

Barts campus is a different issue, they technically fall under Queen Mary Student Union, they are essentially a subsection which deals with the needs of the people at Barts, hence why they have their own societies. One of the silly things from my understanding is that Barts people can join QMSU societies, etc but not the other way round.
Hence why at Queen Mary you have the ISOC and at Barts you have MMD which is Muslim Medics & Dentists....they exist because there are two different campuses so they focus on each campuses needs, having a single one would certainly cause issues.

However, the two different societies do work together to do charity week and a few events. But ultimately they have their own events as well which deal with the specific issues that the students at their campuses have....so MMD as exam period approaches do a lot of courses on getting through their exam material, etc

Meeting Medics and in particular dentists are harder if I got to be honest unless you have some sort of connection....if you are Muslim and do something like Charity Week and are heavily involved you are far more likely to meet one another. Dentists are a lot harder to meet as there exams are during the October/November period so they don't show up at Charity Week.

You're overthinking things... Without a doubt, the people you'll be hanging out with most will be people in your Labs, Seminars and Lectures.

Anyway, you'll see what I mean soon enough. The most mixed societies are the sporting ones, the Rowing, Rugby, Cheerleading etc.. Theirs also a "party" once a month for all the sports societies(Hail Mary).

Hi! Im new to studentroom and dont know if im doing it right or no haha. I have questions related to queen mary uni london and its sports clubs. I wanna be member of one of the sports club, maybe tennis or soccer. But idk the tennis club members seemed to be a little bit...snobb-ish? haha sorry maybe its all tennis clubs in general. and football club seem to be cool but idk if im gonna fit into it bc i dont have really good memories with playing in group or team sports. When I used to play football or any other sport in gym at school, u were basically bullied if u didnt score or played bad. So im afraid i will get "bullied" or not get friends bc im not good at it...And do u have to wear skirt to tennis? And short to football? I dont feel comfortable wearing short skirts or shorts.
And general question are there racism or harrassment on campus or uni? Are ppl mean if u are different?

Football and tennis is not done at QMUL campus, but rather at a dedicated sports centre around mile end usually.
Standard membership for anything is £5, and then more to cover the cost of hiring a place and not sure if they already have equipment, but you'll probably need to bring your own. I doubt they have clothing requirements.

Which sports clubs are done at queen mary campus? And is mile end far away? Btw, I heard there was an orchestra too?

Hi again! I have another question I really hope u can reply to it!! When u are living in dorm and share flatemate, does it mean u live in an apartment and when u open the door ur basically in the livingroom? Or is it more like a hotel structure: many rooms and corridor and then u share a livingroom down the corridor? Thnx in advance!

Are u sure that QMUL students can be part of Barts socieities? But why?? What if u take biologi or chemistry classes?
