We've recently been given the question

"Two ships are shipwrecked onto an island. One held fifty people from a population all of whom have brown eyes. The other had fifty people from a population in which there is eye colour variation. Thirty had brown eyes and 20 had blue eyes. The blue allele is recessive. What is the frequency of the alleles directly after the shipwreck."

Are we to assume that the 30 brown eyed people are heterozygous? or we have to work off the blue eyed allele? any help would be appreciated thanks

Work off the blue eye allele because that's the one you know the frequencies of.

Work from the recessive allele. For the dominant allele, you can't tell if it's heterozygous or homozygous just from the phenotype (brown eyes).

Also be careful with the wording. There are 50 people in one ship but is there only one such ship?
