hello, my teacher said focus on culture, leisure, age and gender. And the most important one is culture. the likely questions are: Examine the way sociologists contribute to our understanding of any two of the following: mass culture, popular culture, folk culture or global culture. or like the role of mass culture or the global culture or the role of culture in general. and I think what came up last year was socialisation and ethnicity but not sure. and the 6 marker question he said it's likely to be on how national identity is shaped.

How would you go about answering 'Examine the way sociologists contribute to our understanding of any two of the following: mass culture, popular culture, folk culture or global culture'? I have absolutely no notes on any sociologists views of the various 'types' of cultures. I know what all of them are, and could answer a little bit on each of them but nothing about how sociologists contribute to our understanding of them? I seen on another thread that someone's teacher said to focus on gender and leisure as these two topics haven't come up yet, however, there has been a leisure question on every single exam paper since 2011?

Gender was also on the January 2013 paper but I do think it's likely culture will come up. I don't know many sociological views on culture but I do know that Marxists don't like mass culture - it keeps the working class distracted from their exploitation. It's a 'dumbed down' culture with things like celebrity gossip / reality tv. They like folk culture as people thought for themselves and where creative. Postmodernists talk about popular culture - they say audiences are active choose what they like and make that popular - they're not passive like Marxists assume. Interactionists reject the Marxist and functionalist view of 'passive consumers' and say audiences can reject culture and don't have to conform to the norms and values. Elite theorists don't like mass culture as they say it breaks down the importance of high culture. Mass culture takes elements of high culture e.g. Classical music and sells it to the masses - this is seen in pop songs which have classical music in. They think all of this makes the working class restless and they want more than they can have. Marcuse ( a Marxist) talks about how advertising creates false needs - which just profits the upper class. Adorno talks about how popular music is 'dumbed down' etc. that is basically all we have studiesd in class. A tip is that all Marxist theories are basically about the working class being exploited so just refer to that in everything! We have also done global culture with sociologists such as Brahman, ang, Gorman and McLean, condry etc. I hope this helped
