I want to get a guinea pig!

As the title said, I'm thinking of getting a guinea pig for me and my brother. I really like the look of them and they seem so cute!

However I'm not too sure of maintance and where to keep them. I heard its best to get more than one since they are sociable animals. If any guinea pig owners could post some advice that would be great!:biggrin:

As long as you both know exactly what's involved in their care, I say go for it  I'd definitely go for a pair, like you said, because they are incredibly sociable and can get quite mentally "down" if they're kept on their own.

They can live for around 5-6 years, and need to be cleaned out and socialised regularly. They can be antisocial little bu***rs if you don't handle them

Here's an RSPCA factfile: http://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/rodents/guineapigs

And here's some info on housing them: http://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/rodents/guineapigs/environment

I would suggest reading up on them a bit first, just to know fully what you're taking on in terms of responsibility.

Hope this helped

Oh thank you. I'm not sure to get them now since I'll be going to Uni and I don't want to leave my brother with all the responsibility. Where do you think is the best place to buy them?

I do recommend getting a guinea pig! They're reasonably low maintenance pets (compared to many others), and you can really bond with them! They're hilarious, I can just sit and watch mine for hours

Guinea Pigs are some of the cutest, sweetest, gentlest pets. They are very timid but also very sociable & friendly at the same time. But if you're getting them just cos you think they are low maintainance that's wrong. You gotta be prepared to spend hundreds on their cage, accessories, vet bills and also time spending with them. Oh and please don't EVER buy from a petshop but adopt from a rescue. When you buy from pet shops, more and more pigs get into the system while there are thousands of pigs that need rescuing and homes & have nowhere to go.By buying you will be funding this unethical practice so please adopt instead. If there are no rescues near you than you can just help by donating. But once you get them you will love them they are adorable. Please check out the Piggiepigpigs channel on YouTube & type in 'Preparing for Guinea Pigs indepth' in YouTube & click on the video by TheSmallPetShop & make sure you do very detailed research. Best of luck to you! 🐹

I have a guinea pig and they are lovely pets! Definitely not low maintenance though... And if anyone tells you they are then they're clearly not looking after them properly.

It is best to get more than one but be aware that two males will often fight while two females are usually more compatible with each other. Or you could get a neutered male and a female. It's usually best to get a pair who already know each other so you can be sure that they'll get along. Having said all that, some guinea pigs just don't like other guinea pigs. I got my guinea pig from a breeder who warned me that he will fight with all other males and I didn't want to risk neutering him so he could live with a female so he lives alone and is very happy with lots of attention.

Think about where you're going to get your guinea pig from too: adoption, a breeder, a pet shop etc. Generally, breeders will have more calm/tame guinea pigs.

There are also LOTS of different coat types. Curly, long, short, VERY long... I have a Peruvian guinea pig whose hair grows to 50cm long so has to be cut, brushed and washed regularly. You need to consider how much time you're willing to put into this.

Also, a book which I found really useful is the Guineapiglopeidia - I think you can get it on Amazon.

Really sorry to have not replied in ages :P I would definitely suggest avoiding Pets at Home, they usually have something physically wrong with them or are either scared stiff of being handled or are aggressive. If possible get one from a reputable breeder near you, or from a reputable petting zoo/family farm park who are regularly inspected and who comply with all the appropriate animal welfare legislation.

That being said, if you want to give one who has previously had an awful existence a second chance, go to somewhere like the Blue Cross or the RSPCA :3
