Priestley presents Mr. Birling as an arrogant self centered man. Look at the beginning stage directions, Mr Birling is seated at a worthy place at the dinner table. He is also presented with dramatic irony with the titanic and WWII speeches showing his arrogance and Priestley presents the right winged class like Mr Birling like an idiot. Then his speech "A man has to mind his own business" summons the inspector which is Preiesltley's mouthpiece which has contradicting views of responsibility. He makes an identical speech near the end of the book "we are all members of one body". Mr Birling afterwards accepts little responsibility for the death of Eva Smith, he just wants to avoid a "public scandal" to protect his reputation. Then at the end there is another bit of irony said which causes another girl to die at the infirmary at the end.
